I saw some things at this zoo I'd never seen before: An anteater eating his breakfast (a dish of what looked like meal worms)...dwarf mongooses up close...spiny anteaters...and two cassowarys. Employees were very friendly, helpful and eager to answer any questions. This is by far the best zoo I've been to in terms of friendly zookeepers, concession workers, volunteers and staff. Be sure to buy tickets to feed the giraffes (unmarked ticket concession near the giraffe exhibit...ask ahead of time where to go to buy tickets; they're only available at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.). It's marvelous to see a giraffe up close! Don't miss that experience! The reason I didn't give a 5-star review is the map and signage are poor. (That's why I know the employees and volunteers are helpful -- I kept asking for directions!) Animals are not always clearly identified with signs on the exhibit...sometimes there are a group of pictures of animals you might see in the next few exhibits but sometimes you see animals that aren't pictured and there's no information about them. There are surprisingly few water fountains, but when I asked for water to refill by water bottle at a concession stand, there was no problem. It was filled gladly, and for free, with cold filtered water. Today, a standard admission adult ticket cost $17.50 so the price advertised on Trip Advisor is a good deal. I wish I had bought that voucher!

Took the wife and two boys to the zoo on the 26th. My youngest is going through a dinosaur phase and they just opened the zoorasic exhibits. He loved the animatronics and all the monkey exhibits. Not a bad zoo considering it's in the city of San Antonio. If you have been to the San Diego Zoo, you can't compare the two. Its not a giant zoo like in SD. But it is a nice place to walk around and let the kiddos run around. They do give a Military Discount, $1 off the admission price. In the month of May, military members are free and up to 4 immediate dependents are 50% off, or you can buy an annual pass for 20% off.

I tend to avoid zoos in other countries but apparently this was one of the best in the States. If it is I'm not sure I would want to go to others. Let's start with the good. The butterfly exhibit was fantastic. There were a lot of children in the exhibit but they were fascinated by all the butterflies flying around. The fish, reptile and some of the primate exhibits were great as well. Now the not so good. One of the first exhibits you come to is the spectacle bears. This was a definite no for me. It was just concentrate. Where was the foliage, the greenery, something to keep these bears from getting bored? I felt very sad seeing these bears like this. The jaguar paced in its small exhibit and the rhino was in the same sort of concrete exhibit as the spectacle bears. If you don't mind this then go as the children will love it. But not for me.
