I took a morning cruise with my kids midweek and although we didn't see any whales - we saw lots of other marine life. The biologists and naturalists on board are excellent. They spotted things that I swear no one else would have seen. The best - a sunfish. One solitary sunfish floating around in a big sea and they spotted him. And - the captain maneuvered that boat so that everyone could see that cute face on the fish (yes - fish can look cute!). We also saw purple jellyfish, black jellyfish and two types of dolphins. They said usually dolphins just swim and leap out of the water a bit, but the frisky dolphins on our trip were busy engaging in play and mating behaviors. We even saw lots of babies. I will say your best bet is to take your Dramamine (motion sickness pill) at least 30 minutes before you get on the boat. It can be rough and rocky out there. All three of us took our meds. My son is prone to motion sickness and even with meds, let's just say he was still feeding the fish his breakfast. My daughter gets motion sickness sometimes, but with the meds she was standing on the front of the boat catching waves and spray like a champ. She compared it to being on a roller coaster. I rarely get motion sickness but I was darn glad to have taken the medicine. If you feel ill, they'll give you a plastic bag, plant you at the back of the boat and also give you paper towels. I'd say a good 25% of the people on our cruise were sick. Buy your medicine at a drugstore before you go (about $6 for a pack of 24-36pills). They will sell you medicine on board at $3 per person, but by then it's just too late to help with the nausea. Careful placing anything on the floor under your bench, as sometimes waves wash up on the deck. The crew is so darn nice on this cruise that even without seeing whale, it was well worth it. BTW - check groupon website for coupon deals and also the company's website for buy one get one free offers.

We took the morning cruise, which I highly recommend over the afternoon tour. The staff were friendly, Biologist was there to inform us when she spotted any Dolphins or Whales. It was relaxing and exciting at the same time. We look forward to taking another Trip.

This was the first thing we did while visiting San Diego for the 1st time. Our family of five LOVED it! We didn't see any whales, but it didn't matter. We saw lots and lots of dolphins (common & bottle nose). This is something we will do every time we visit CA.
