Aperçu
The San Diego Zoo is a 100-acre wildlife park and home to over 12,000 rare and endangered animals, representing more than 650 species and subspecies. Located just north of downtown San Diego in Balboa Park, the Zoo is also an accredited botanical garden, caring for more than 700,000 individual plants, including a prominent curated assemblage of close to 13,000 specimens, representing 3,100 species.

The expansive new 3.2-acre Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is designed to appeal to all ages and foster empathy for wildlife by exploring nature. Built on the site of the historic Children’s Zoo, the basecamp features fresh and innovative elements, including eight buildings and habitats dispersed throughout four different habitat zones: Rainforest, Wild Woods, Marsh Meadows and Desert Dunes.

Tickets must be purchased at least one day prior to visit.

This zoo has been on my bucket list my entire life. I was so excited to finally get to go. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes because this zoo is huge! The zoo offers bus tours and a bus that you can hop on and off of as well. Next time I think that I'll go with that option. We were literally at the zoo all day long. So much to see! Some of the animals were sleeping or hiding, but we did get to see most of the inhabitants. The zoo has plenty of places to snack or eat at. I loved the volunteers that were in everywhere. So helpful and full of so much information. I think I enjoyed the Orangutan Exhibit the most. They were so active and Karen (one of the Orangutan) basically was trying to interact with the people. I suggest you purchase a souvenir drink cup, because you can get free drinks for the entire day, because it will get hot.

😍😍😍Absolutely Fantastic Experience 😍😍😍 Superb Tropical Rainforest Settings throughout. Superb Displays of the Animals & Labels. It helps to read up about “ How to see the San Diego Zoo NICELY “ URLs, first. Asked at the Counter for Maps & ADA Maps & Shuttle Bus Stops’ Markings on those Maps. Did the Aerial Tramway several times. Did the Shuttle Bus Tour twice, sitting once on RIGHT side & once on LEFT side. Coffee was $ 7 + Tax !!! Negative :: “ Map Points 14 & 15 “ are NOT marked on the Map. OVERALL :: VERY HIGHLY POSITIVE EXPERIENCE 😍😍😍😍

Arrived at the Zoo at about 10:30am and there were so many animals out and about. Very active animals at this Zoo. I have never a koala bear in person, and I could have stood there and watched them all day. They were being fed so they were moving around a lot, and even the ones that were curled up in a tree, they were so cute I could have been there all day. The zoo is huge, and even though we were there for 6.5 hours, we still missed a whole quarter of the zoo. We also had an animal experience that where we got to feed flamingos, pet a zebra, had a cheetah walk right by us on a leash. We also had up an close interaction with other animals to include a Bearcat, Hippos, and a Porcupine. I look forward to going back to this zoo next time I am in San Diego, because there is still so much more to see and do!.
