The Savor the Flavors Food tour visited 5 places. The sampler plates highlighted the Low Country Cuisine. The amount of food was just right and filling at the 3 main restaurants. The two other shops were okay but mainly highlighted what the sold. However, one of the shops gave out a great sweet treat at the end of the visit. Our tour leader was Gordon and he was very knowledgeable about the foods and the history of them.

My wife and I took a fun Walking Culinary Tour of Historic Charleston lead by a fun lady named Fran. The restaurants that were chosen represented four of the types of foods offered in the South. At each location we were given delicious samples of the food they offered. Fran also told much of the history of the city as we walked. She is a very knowledgable guide who everyone would enjoy spending time with.

We took the morning (10am) food tour with Franny as our guide. It began on time and we walked a short distance to our first stop at Another Broken Egg (yes it is a chain but, as we soon discovered, offered great local food too). Here we enjoyed a bowl of cheese grits & bacon and fried green tomatoes. Nice way to start off the morning! Next, we strolled to The Spice and Tea Exchange and learned that Charleston has the only tea plantation in the US. (The Charleston Tea Plantation located on Wadmalaw Island and now owned by Bigalow Tea.) We sampled several teas and spiced dips here. Our tour continued, with Franny expertly narrating as we walked pointing out historic sites and explaining culinary trends, to Low Country Bistro which originally had been a produce warehouse. Here we savored a creamy she crab soup (recipe posted on the wall) and Carolina-style shrimp/sausage gumbo. Portions were perfect and locations far enough apart to not feel rushed or stuffed. Next, we walked a bit to Poogan's Smoke House for oh-so-yummy corn bread served with bacon butter, pork sliders and fried pimento fritters. Here we learned about the different styles of smoking and sauces. Who knew mustard sauce could be so good on pork?? Finally, we walked back to the straw market area (close to where we began) and sampled some very tasty sweets at River Street Sweets. Our 2 1/2 hours flew by so quickly. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and would recommend Franny and Bull Dog to any foodies who plan to visit Charleston!
