Mr. Gregory’s shrimp boil is a MUST EAT if you are in NOLA! I went on my own in November 2019 and felt very comfortable and so well cared for by not only Mr. Gregory but also his helpers, which included a fabulous drag queen who sang live for our entertainment - so cool ;) We got to start the night with a amuse bouche of alligator sausage (I had more than one - Mr. Gregory is kind enough to supply extras for those like me who want seconds and sometimes even thirds lol!) and then we had some beautifully prepared redfish fresh caught that day, which I had never tried before and was light and delicate (and again I had seconds!). That was followed by even another dish served in a crab shell which was so gooooood but I can’t remember the name at the moment (too busy eating to remember I guess! LOL).
Our chef explained that he gets his catches directly from a boat and fishermen he has been connected to for years and the differences in catches for different seasons and why we were having our specific meal in November-we were lucky enough to be having white shrimp and they were sweetly flavored and surprisingly large...he showed us his shrimp boil pot and it smelled AMAZING, and it was fun to see our meal before we got INTO it. And when I say INTO it I mean we got into POUNDS of delicious shrimp (and corn on the cob and other things but my focus strayed razor sharp on those SHRIMP! EPIC!).
I will admit though I am of a smaller stature I can EAT and I felt immense gratitude for the entire night’s feast-it was not only delicious but educational. After eating with Mr. Gregory I understand why eating wild caught fish and shellfish/etc. is so important - keeping the balance right in our oceans is of vital importance! And being able to celebrate the gorgeous food our planet provides for us with this man and his crew was a very special and unforgettable experience. Buy wild caught fish from local fisherpeople-it’s worth the extra $$$!
Bring your own bottle of wine if you would like (though I think sometimes he has beers on hand for purchase he may not always), OH! AND don’t forget about dessert-it was incredible too so save a little room for that and chicory coffee and if you’re lucky possibly a shot of something special...
Truly an all around spectacular only-in-New-Orleans experience-I will for SURE be back next time I am in NOLA and actually can’t wait!
