Hellbender Brewing Company
These breweries are sample itineraries only. All schedules are subject to change. This handsomely-helmed DC brewery got its name from the Eastern Hellbender Salamander, which is the largest salamander in North America, and the third largest in the world! So, it’s safe to say that their beers boast BIG flavors. But they don’t just brew killer ales, they do it in an environmentally sound, super-efficient way using their hammer mill and mash filter to protect the earth from harsh effects and you from bad beer. Unlike any brewery on the east coast, Hellbender Brewing is able to use less grain and less water for all of its brews but brings you more flavor than you can even imagine. Let us take you on a behind the scenes tour of this brewery’s unique process and walk you through the science of why less really is more.
2
Port City Brewing Company
Tucked at the western most tip of Washington, DC, Port City Brewing Company is Northern Virginia’s most notable brewery. We know what you’re thinking… Virginia?! I thought this was a DC Brew Tour. And you’re right, but you may not know that Alexandria, VA is only a stone’s (bottlecap’s?) throw away from DC, and they’re churning out some of the most incredible craft brews that we just had to feature them on the tour. And to show us some love for including them, they’ve generously offered our tour-goers special samples and beers that are exclusive to the brewery and pack such a malty pinch, you may even forget you’re on planet earth. In fact, their beer is so good it earned them Best Small Brewery in America in 2016.
3
Right Proper Brewing Company
Right Proper Brewing Company started as a vision that centered around DC as a hometown, with each neighborhood defined by a different culture. A vision of heading to your local pub to grab a fresh glass of beer that was brewed on premise. A vision that would be defined by the yeasts used to ferment the beer, as opposed to the hops used to bitter it.

Brasserie Hellbender

Right Proper Brewing Company started as a vision that centered around DC as a hometown, with each neighborhood defined by a different culture. A vision of heading to your local pub to grab a fresh glass of beer that was brewed on premise. A vision that would be defined by the yeasts used to ferment the beer, as opposed to the hops used to bitter it.

We surprised my husband with a DC Signature Brew Tour for his birthday. There were 5 of us in the party and we followed the directions provided in our reservation. We parked at the parking garage near our meeting point. Once back on the street, we easily identified the City Brew Tour van and made our way across the street. We met Will, our friendly guide. who introduced himself and welcomed our group to the tour. We filled out our name tags which were required to wear during the tour. We had a large group who filled the van and we were on our way to our first of three breweries. On our tour, we visited Atlas, Red Bear, and Aslin Beer Company. We had a great time, despite not all of us being fans of beer. Our guide was a great communicator and we learned a lot about the brewing process as well as the history of brewing in D.C. It was a great day and I recommend the company and especially our guide Will, who made the day positive and enjoyable.

Visited 3 venues around DC with our knowledgeable driver Bryan. Tasted a wide variety of beers and had some snacks as well. Highly recommend this tour if you enjoy the pursuit of the best beer.

Absolutely amazing beer tour experience. I loved going through the breweries of Washington DC and learning and tasting different beers, all of them delicious, by the way. I was travelling on my own but the guide and other people in the tour made me feel welcome, and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I would definitely do it again if I am back in DC one day. If I remember well, Bryan was our guide and he was sensational. Keep up the excellent work, guys, well done!
