While the scenery was beautiful, the road was very scary especially with the driver we had. He was obviously familiar with the road, but seemed to go too fast for my comfort level. I think I could recommend the half trip, but not the whole trip completely around.

Aloha Cindy, Thank you for your review. We are very sorry to hear of your discomfort. We did check the GPS report from your tour and did not exceed the speed limit. The Road to Hana is comprised of 617 curves, 54 one lane bridges, switchbacks and blind turns just to Hana town. This is why a professional tour guide/driver and continuing beyond around the "back side" is a great idea as there are very little turns at that point. We understand you were very anxious for the tour and possibly a little confused from the beginning as you gave the incorrect hotel information. Maybe this kind of trip was not a good fit for your comfort level, as the other guests onboard did not have the same impression of your driver's speed as you did and were very complementary towards him.

When visiting Maui, you should definitely take the Road to Hana -- but if you want a rewarding experience do not take a Mahalo Tour. Rob, the Mahalo guide for our July private tour, was rude and uncooperative. When we asked what sights, we were going to see, he replied "I'm not going to tell you -- read the itinerary". We did read the itinerary and were disappointed that we spent so much time at wayside bathroom stops and pineapple smoothie shacks that we never made stops promised by the itinerary at Hamoa Beach, Hana Town, and Red Sand Beach. We felt rushed throughout the day and were not able to spend quality time at the stops. Additionally, outside of a few comments regarding the tropical foliage, our guide was unwilling or unable to provide any background or history during the tour. It would have been nice to hear why Hana was settled and why the road to it was built. This was strange and disappointing. To cap off our day, Mahalo's tour bus broke down with a burst radiator hose that left us stranded on the side of the road for over two hours. Mahalo Tours performance was disappointing in that they sent their guide and guests out without doing a basic safety check on the van engine. It was also disappointing that no one with Mahalo -- including our guide Rob -- took the time to explain the issue nor apologize for our roadside delay. You should definitely take the Road to Hana -- just not with Mahalo Tours.

Aloha Robert, We are very sorry that you found our tour guide to be "rude and uncooperative”. We strive to be exceptional and are always disheartened to hear that we have not met or exceeded our goal. That being said, we would be happy to respond to some of the points that you made in your review. 1. You stated that Hana Town was a missed stop. You spend an hour at Waianapanapa State Park (black sand beach) which is located in Hana Town. Also, you had lunch at Koki Beach which is also located in Hana Town. 2. Hamoa Beach is closed to commercial vehicles and there’s two red beaches Kaihalulu (the “red sand beach”) is on private property and there are multiple No Trespassing signs posted and the second red sand beach you had our lunch in. 3. Per the GPS installed on all our vehicles, your tour made all the scheduled and authorized stops. 4. We are sorry that you wanted stops in unauthorized, prohibited, restricted and or private property, but we will not break the law no matter the passengers demands. 5. Your tour bus did have a mechanical issue. Stating that we did not do “a basic safety check” is blatantly FALSE. Of course we do! We have a mechanic on staff but just like the airlines, the vehicles are run day after day after day, and unfortunately, break downs do happen even with daily checks and nightly service. All tour drivers do a pre and post vehicle check which is required by law. 6. You were not left “stranded” as a replacement bus was dispatched immediately. Of course, it does take time to make it out to the location considering the distance and road conditions. Lastly, your driver Rob is our most requested and highly reviewed driver. You wanted to know “why Hana was settled” and “why the road was built”. Unfortunately, since Hawaii was first settle in 400CE and did not have a written language, we do not have the answers to all questions. We pride ourselves on not making up answers just to have something to say. Mahalo

Rob did a good job. We had a fun time in the black sand beach. Watch out for the long windy and a short bumpy road, yet it’s a fun experience.
