You will start your excursion by checking into our log cabin office at the Talkeetna State Airport 45 minutes prior to your flight departure. Be sure to bring your sunglasses, light jacket (in the summer) and plenty of memory on your camera. Board our ski-equipped aircraft and enjoy your pilots' commentary about the geological history and local wildlife on your individual headset. Continue your flight above Talkeetna and over the river systems of the Susitna valley as you enter into an incredible landscape of icefalls, glaciers and snow peaks. You'll be awed by the Great Gorge of the Ruth Glacier, filled with a 4,000 foot thick river of ice, making this one of the deepest gorges in the world. We booked the 1.5 hour Southside Explorer w/Glacier Landing tour for 6 adults. We called Talkeetna Air when we arrived in Talkeetna. Because our train did not let us out at the train station there was some confusion as to where to pick us up. After a few phone calls we were picked up and taken to their office at the airport. When we went inside we were told the owner was checking the weather. They told us it would be too windy for the glacier landing. We could cancel the flight and get a 100% refund or get a 30 minute longer flight to the North Range. We decided to take the longer flight. Although we were disappointed that we did not land on a glacier safety is their main concern and we understood that. After paying the final payment we went outside to get our glacier boots, just in case. We walked to the plane and met our pilot. He gave us a safety talk and told us some things about the plane. We all boarded and biu on our headsets and seatbelts. The headsets did not have a microphone so we could not communicate with each other. We had a very smooth takeoff. The flight was very smooth except when we went over a mountain. Nothing to worry about. Flying over the glaciers and snow cover peaks is just amazing. It looks like you can reach out and touch them but the pilot said we were at least a mile away. After flying over the North Range the pilot swung around and took us over College Fjord. The cool thing about this was the day before we were in the fjord on the Golden Princess cruise ship. What a beautiful way to see everything!

We were due to arrive in Talkeetna in the afternoon, but knew it was a possibility that our flight would need to be changed or canceled due to weather. Sure enough, we got a call that we needed to reschedule for the next day due to weather. We were given a morning option or an afternoon option. Thinking it plausible that morning cloud cover would burn off by the afternoon, we took the afternoon option. The office called us the next morning and asked if we could bump things up and arrive about 1.5 hours earlier than planned. We knew this was kind of the deal with flight seeing trips, so we rolled with it. Very well run operation, in our experience. Got super up close to Mount Foraker and Hunter and did the glacier landing. Great views, with very good narration from our pilot (forget his name). Family is still talking about it. We did ATVs in Denali, rafting outside of Hope, a cruise of Prince William Sound and this flight seeing trip for our big days out, along with a bunch of hiking. This was a big highlight of the trip.

This was once in a life time experience. We were not sure about this due to the cost. But, I think it was totally worth it. Glacier landing in midst of the mountains was unbelievable! The staff was very pleasant. Our pilot Clay was informative and friendly. Highly recommend this tour.
