The Jungle Prada Site is the best-preserved American Indian site in Tampa Bay. The highlight of our 75-minute guided Florida history tour is a huge Tocobaga Indian midden mound and adjoining village plaza. Hidden away in the historic neighborhood known as Jungle Prada, the main mound consists of tens of thousands of ancient conch and whelk shells, and is more than 900 feet long! The subtropical jungle landscape here is populated by dozens of beautiful free-roaming peacocks! The tour and the locations are loaded with Florida history that is explained in a vibrant and engaging way. In addition to learning about the lives of the Tocobaga Indians, you'll also encounter the amazing story of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, a Spanish conquistador who landed at the Jungle Prada with the 1528 Narvaez Expedition, and whose incredible journey of survival took him and three others from Florida all the way to the Pacific Ocean (1528 - 1536).

GO AND GO AGAIN. Our guide, David, gave an exuberant and very informative presentation on the native tribe that lived during the pre Columbian era. This is an outdoor walking tour with short presentations at the start and finish. The tour also covers the Spanish arrival to the area and the Spaniard's impact on the surrounding areas and peoples. David's family own a section of land where this tribe lived for over 600 years. They recognize their responsibility to act as care takers of this historical site while living there. If you love peacocks, you have a treat as there are OVER 50 of them roaming the grounds and in the trees. Shedded peacock feathers are for sale in the gift shop as well as palm honey, books on the history of the area and other special things. I brought 2 long feathers which my cats have enjoyed chasing as I flick them through the air! Sorry no photos as I was focused on the presentation and taking in the sites. Under priced so be sure to make a donation!

We have lived in St. Pete for 7 years, and finally did the Jungle Prada tour. David does an amazing job of bringing you 900 years of local history, including the Tocobaga nation, their on-site shell mounds, and the Spanish groups that first "discovered" the area and settled there. Starting with the intro talk indoors, excellent videos, the museum with many relics from archaeological digs there, and listening to David while we strolled through the beautiful "jungle" area owned by his family for 3 generations, we learned so much about these native and Spanish groups and how they lived and changed this part of St. Pete. It is truly a beautiful area and interesting tour.

David is a wonderful guide explaining the local history. We learned a lot and will return for another tour and events on site. We are grateful that the Anderson family has protected and shared a part of history that would have otherwise been lost to progress. It’s a peaceful spot.
