The schedule online is very misleading and confusing. It should be made into a chart type graph for better understanding. They basically write their schedule for residents and not tourists. We know because it makes assumptions we know what every destination is. We were in vacationing in Sausalito. The first 3 ferries to SF were to the Port of SF. The next one was to Fisherman's Wharf. Then it alternated randomly throughout the day. Its a 30 minute ride. Its a 1.3 mile walk to Fisherman's Wharf from the Ferry Bldg/Port of SF. You get good views of the GG bridge and up close to Alcatraz. The trolley/bus between them has no instructions for the 'F Line', doesn't take cash, requires an app or a digital ticket/card with no information to tell you where to get them. According to a couple locals, they said, "Just get on. We never pay for the bus." With our limited time, we went native and followed their lead. Then we caught the hour long ferry back to Sausalito from Pier 41.

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate your observation about the ferries and will consider making changes to pick up and drop off locations for tourists. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Sausalito. All best wishes, Dennis

We chose to use this form of transport to get from Sausalito across the bay and into San Francisco. the costs are reasonable and the journey delightful. It was far better than facing the drive into the city and the long traffic queues and the need for a parking space once there. The times are reasonable although it it worth doing a bit of research prior to travel as there are numerous early morning / later afternoon ferries, but less choice when travelling mid morning. Yes they do cater fro the commuter, so check the sailing times BEFORE you travel. The trip across the bay and into Pier 39, lasts only thirty minutes or so, but on most days the crossings are calm and provide an excellent opportunity to take that classic holiday snap of Alcatraz Prison, as the ferry does pass within a short distance of the famous island. The ride does also give you good views of the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, as well as views of downtown San Francisco. The ferries do get busy and do allow bicyclists to take their bikes on board, so sometime you do have to wait for all of these to be disembarked. There are several ferries operating around the bay area and not all go to the tourist area - Pier 39. some take you to the ferry terminal which is not located at Pier 39, so be aware of your destination before boarding. We also took the ferry around the bay area and enjoyed a peaceful cruise over to Angel Island and Tiburon. Well worth the time to see more of what can be offered in the bay area.

Have to say found it all quite disorganised. We took the ferry only one way from Sausalito to San Francisco. There is a published timetable but get there early to buy the tickets from the machines. Only 2 machines and it was busy with bikes too and although there is a staff around it seem to take forever so we missed the first Ferry. They are not that frequent more than 1 hour wait for the next one. 13 dollars for one way. Big queue to get on once on lots of options to sit out or in and a bar with drinks and snacks and toilets too. Nice to see the views from the ferry especially Alcatraz and it’s only a 30 minute ride back.
