Our guide, Jerry, started the tour by telling us he was going to run over the time by 30 minutes, which is what happened. This had a lot to do with how slowly we managed to get through things. While I appreciated and understood taking the time to explain the historical facts of the market and the area, I didn't need to know how much he pays to have a tour guide license or to wait while he stopped to chat with his friends he bumped into at the market during the tour. What I really found frustrating upon reflection after the tour is how many of the samples we had during the tour would have been free to me if I had just been walking through the market on my own- the smoked salmon, the items in the truffle store and the tea shop immediately come to mind. Why pay for a tour to sample foods I would have gotten anyway? By the end not only were we over time, but the stories we were hearing were repeats from the beginning of the tour, yet another reason our time ran over. This was a real disappointment from start to finish for me, and I was still hungry afterward, which was the other disappointing part,...having to grab dinner after a 3 hour "food tour."
