Unexpected Wall Street Walking Tour

Aperçu
Gordon Gekko told the world that greed is good, but there's much more to Wall Street - and the (former) Financial District - than finance and greed! Dutch settlement, the British, and the Revolutionary War may come to mind. Yes, we'll talk finance on this tour. Sure, we'll explore NYC's Dutch roots, the Redcoats, and the Sons of Liberty. But this old part of New York City is also a saint's birthplace, a Lenape hunting trail, anarchists, the invention of takeout food, vandals, an infamous ghost, the former home of a wild turkey, immigrants, and obscure monuments. It's dark alleys and twisty streets and secrets. This tour, then, is a spotlight on unexpected Wall Street.

My friends and I are history buffs, so Suzanne's tour of the area around Wall Street was perfect. Over two hours of wandering the narrow streets, we saw the edge of the island -- including plenty of places built on landfill, through the Canyon of Heroes and onto Wall Street proper. Suzanne's amusing anecdotes spanned Dutch colonial times through modern day. Highly recommend to anyone interested in the origins of New York City and all the many things that flowed from its founding in the 1600s.

I am a retired history teacher who has lived in New York my whole life, and yet I was totally unaware of the back story of lower Manhattan. Ms. Reisman brought its history alive with not just factual information but also colorful anecdotes. I finished the tour having thoroughly enjoyed myself and feeling as if I had gained insider knowledge of the city. I would highly recommend this tour.

This tour was awesome! As someone who has lived and worked in NYC for ~25 years, I still learned a lot from our very funny and well-informed tour guide, Suzanne. What I loved most was how she pointed out points of historical and cultural significance that I never knew about, but are actually "hiding in plain sight" as I rush by on my way to something else. I would highly recommend this tour for locals and NYC visitors alike. A fun way to spend the day.
