Le Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum est situé et opère à partir de l'ancien complexe marin de la Portland Company, l'organisation a été fondée en 1993. La collection se compose d'équipements de passagers et de fret, ainsi que d'artefacts de 2 pieds (610 mm) chemins de fer à voie étroite qui circulaient dans l'État du Maine à la fin du 19e siècle et au début du 20e siècle. L'organisation exploite un chemin de fer long de 1 1⁄2 mile (2,4 km) qui longe le front de mer de Casco Bay et est parallèle à la promenade est de Portland. Des locomotives à vapeur et diesel historiques et une variété d'entraîneurs restaurés sont utilisés pour assurer les services de passagers sur le chemin de fer.

Observatoire de Portland

L'observatoire de Portland est une tour de signalisation maritime historique située au 138 Congress Street dans la section Munjoy Hill de Portland, dans le Maine. Construite en 1807, c'est la seule tour connue de ce type aux États-Unis. En utilisant à la fois un télescope et des drapeaux de signalisation, une communication bidirectionnelle entre le navire et le rivage était possible plusieurs heures avant qu'un navire entrant n'atteigne les quais. La tour a été désignée monument historique national en 2006; il est maintenant géré par une association locale à but non lucratif en tant que musée et est ouvert au public. L'observatoire de Portland est la seule station de signalisation maritime restante aux États-Unis. Les opérations de la tour étaient payées avec des redevances annuelles perçues auprès des marchands maritimes, qui achetaient le droit de stocker leurs drapeaux dans le bâtiment et hissaient ses mâts lorsque leurs navires étaient aperçus. Un téléphone a finalement été installé, prolongeant la fonction de la tour jusqu'en 1923, date à laquelle la fiabilité des navires à moteur et la communication par radio l'ont rendue obsolète.
