My husband & I had the opportunity to do the Geo Volcano tour through Hilton. Zane Smith was our expert educated geologist on our tour and he did not disappoint in educating us on not only about everything there is to know about volcano’s & the ecosystem, but was knowledgeable in everything that was asked of him regarding Hawaiian culture, animals, flowers, terrain, history and the list could go on forever! We come to the islands every few years, but walked away only today from our 12 hr tour knowing that we received the best information about the island of Kona (& the other Hawaiian islands ) than we had ever known! We stopped at Rainbow Falls, visited Volcano Winery & Teas-( with a nice lunch included ),walked inside a lava tube , spent time at the ocean cliffs watching the waves, saw the historic house/inn at Kilauea, enjoyed the steam vents, ate a delicious dinner at Lava Rock Cafe( the macadamia nut bars were the bomb), & ventured back to the rim of the crater to see “her mighty glow “as the sky darkened. On our ride back to the Hilton, we were shown excellent videos of the devastation that occurred during 2018 to Leilana Estates and the surrounding communities ( also saw footage of eruptions that occurred in 1950’s and during later years). We rode in a comfortable Mercedes Van with limited seating(not your typical greyhound bus where your packed in like sardines). We were offered drinks throughout the day which was a blessing as we had perfect warm & sunny weather. For most of us who forgot a jacket, Zane had enough windbreakers to keep everyone warm( an added bonus was the hot facecloth offered after getting chilled from viewing the glow of the volcano). Zane went beyond our expectations to make sure that we had a great time, were not hungry, that we walked away with all our questions answered & that we all gained a appreciation for Hawaii & it’s residents. We truly enjoyed spending the day on this tour, and is the best tour we have ever taken!
