Kailua-Kona

Kona is the ultimate whale and wildlife destination. Kona’s calm waters, deep coastlines, and variety of marine life make the region a world-class wildlife location. Our tours leave out of Honokohau Harbor, which has access to both near-shore and pelagic zones. Exploring the near-shore zone, you have the opportunity to see humpbacks during the winter months, spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, manta rays, and flying fish. With a US Coast Guard offshore certification, Hawaiian Adventures Kona can also reach the pelagic zone- something very few tours do. The pelagic zone expands the search into waters thousands of feet deep to look for pilot whales, beaked whales, sperm whales, spotted dolphins, whale sharks, and more! Hawaiian Adventures’ tour durations allow for a greater search range, more time with whales, and more wildlife encounters on every tour!

We had a little trouble finding the sign for the boat—make sure you drive past the marina and you will see it farther down the road! The crew were great and very knowledgeable. They shared information with us throughout the excursion. There were only 13 people on our boat so it made it easy to move around. We went out 45 minutes from shore then slowed down when sealife was spotted. One of the girls on the crew taking pictures for the research program was able to point out sealife underwater so it was great to be able to be ready to videotape (which was easier than taking pictures) at just the right time. We saw a lot of false killer whales, a small school of dolphins, and an oceanic white tipped shark. The boat ride had rolling swells much of the time which we didn’t expect to be so bouncy. My husband got seasick twice. We did not take Dramamine like we should have, though I wore acupressure bracelets which seemed to work okay. Moving around was a little challenging though grabbing onto chairs helped. I am glad we had a chance to have this experience on our trip!

If you like a 4 hr boat ride without seeing anything it was great. It was definitely a waste of money.

We really had a great time on the sea. The crew was very friendly and knowledgeable! Their new Artemis boat is very comfortable, and has the perfect size for that kind of activity. We were lucky to see a group of 80+ Melon-headed whales!
