Arctic Circle Trading Post

Just one of the stops made along the way to see up close and learn about the natural and cultural history of Alaska's Arctic -- here learn of the early homesteading in Alaska and how early pioneers forged a home out in the middle of the wilderness.

Yukon River Bridge

The tour will stop at the Yukon River Camp both on the way north and way south. Guests can either have brought their own food to eat or purchase lunch/dinner here. Plus, guests get a chance to get out and explore the banks of the mighty Yukon River.

Celebrate reaching the Arctic Circle at Milepost 115 of the Dalton Highway -- 200 miles north of Fairbanks! All guests will earn an official Arctic Circle Certificate.

Arctic Circle Trading Post

As the tour approaches Fairbanks a stop will be made at Joy, Alaska at the Arctic Circle Trading Post (60 miles from Fairbanks). Here guests on the Arctic Circle Aurora Drive will meet their new Aurora guide who will continue the story of life in Alaska's Arctic and work with guests to look for the Aurora. Joy is located outside of the Fairbanks North Star Borough so away from the city lights and the tour places guests there during the peak activity time as identified by the scientists studying the lights. The Arctic Circle Trading Post is heated and there is hot water for complimentary coffee, tea, cocoa and cider. Time at Joy can vary depending on weather and road conditions (how long it took to get there). One could expect anywhere between 1 - 2 hours. Return to Fairbanks is between 3:30 - 4:30 AM.

Our driver, Paul, did a great job navigating the often bumpy gravel roads. He narrated about the history and natural history of the area. He also showed videos related to the topic. This made the rather long drive go more quickly. We saw the Alaska Pipeline, Yukon River, Old 70's homestead, Finger Mt., and of course, we crossed the Arctic Circle!!!

We took the Artic Circle tour with Northern Alaska Tour Company in March. A few positive things; the guide. He was excellent! He told us some very interesting facts on our tour. He was full of knowledge which made for some interesting stories. The scenery was beautiful. Now, the negative. If you are pregnant, have neck or back problems I would not recommend this tour. In March there is still ice and snow on the ground. Something our guide told us surprised me. They do not salt or sand during winter, they lay gravel. All of the gravel on top of already bad roads made for a horrible ride there and back! I have a serious back problem and had I know what the ride was going to be like I never ever would have taken this tour. It was a horrible experience for me. Not only is it a long day already but driving on those roads only exacerbated my pain. This is something the tour company failed to disclose on the description of this excursion or to us in person when we checked in. I think it is very unprofessional of them not to disclose this information to people paying the kind of money we did for the tour. So, just some food for thought if you are planning on taking this particular tour. Beware.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with others and to allow us to continue to review how we can continue to share the fact .. The Dalton Highway is a gravel road. We don't hide that and it is easily written everywhere there is any article written about the Dalton Highway. On Viator in the Health Restrictions we have selected .. "Not recommended for travelers with back problems" We are not sure how we can make that any clearer using their system as that appears to say exactly what you are asking -- to share with guests .. do not take this trip if you have back problems. but, again, based on your feedback we will take it under review and see if we can make any changes or ask Viator to try and place that information in a different place so future visitors using Viator can see it. So glad you enjoyed the time with your guide, the scenery, and the information provided - sounds like a good review of the tour and a caution on how / where information on the trip can be found. Thank you,
