Audubon Zoo

Visit the world-class Audubon Zoo in New Orleans to see rare and endangered animals in award-winning exhibits. Enjoy 50+ acres of innovative natural habitats and 1,700+ animals representing more than 350 species. See the African lion habitat featuring breathtakingly close views of 3 females and 1 male, and the outdoor Sumatran orangutan habitat featuring orangutan babies born at the zoo. Discover the famous Monkey Hill, featuring a 5-level treehouse. Be transported to Central America at the Jaguar Jungle, complete with an archeological dig, spider monkeys, ocelots, a jaguar, and the “Criaturas de la Noche” bat house. Check out the Louisiana Swamp Exhibit, the world’s only urban swamp, showcasing animals from South Louisiana like black bears, bobcats, foxes, and the white alligator. Interact with domestic species, such as sheep and goats, while learning about sustainable agricultural practices at Watoto Farm.

My family makes it a practice to visit zoos when we travel. This was pretty typical as far as animals available and exhibits. There is a neat rolling hill for kids and a swamp area that is unique. The big issue was one section of zoo near the lion exhibit has major beehive nearby. Bees absolutely swarming everywhere, particularly near garbage cans. I am not particularly sensitive to bees, but my 6yr old had several fly into her face and became very upset. Numerous other families with young kids ran away in fear. I can't comment if this is common or just the time we were there. Unfortunately, this experience turned otherwise average zoo experience into negative.

Lots of animals to see. Enclosures seemed humane. Loved the flamingoes at the entrance and the many species of water birds that could be observed at close range in the Aviary. Anyone visiting the zoo should also check out the adjacent Audobon park with its lake filled with native water birds. If you have time, use the St Charles streetcar to get there from downtown/French Quarter to enjoy the scenes of the Garden District along the way.

Great zoo much better than I thought it would be. Taxi is expensive from Canal street hotel but was worth it very big zoo lots to see lots of walking but again worth it
