Amazing trip to the top of Mauna Kea. Don’t try this one on your own, you’ll need 4WD to get to the top (not a lot of rental companies allow this trip). Also the altitude, you’re at 13K feet and if you will feel it. Best to go with an experienced guide/group. Not only that, you won’t want to pack everything you’ll need once you get up there. Dominic and Jin were our guides and we couldn’t have hoped for anyone better. We learned a lot about the area, history and of course the stars. We were well taken care of, the food, the jackets/pants (yes! you will need them!) and the hot tea/cocoa on the way down. Not only that Jin is an amazing photographer! Even my kids were impressed, which is no small feat when traveling with 2 teenage boys.

It was hard to find this tour! We tried with several companies, most were booked. One we bought and then the tour group cancelled. So already, just being able to go on this one was a plus! The tour guide, Shoyo, was awesome. He had a great sense of humor and knew a lot about the island. He was a pretty good driver as well (coming down the mountain was a lot of brake-go-brake-go that made my husband and I a little car sick). The pictures that Shoyo took of us were great, especially the star ones! We were lucky that it was a new moon the night we went so visibility was great! Shoyo also pointed out the International Space Station for us (we were technically done with star gazing and had gone back to the van until his app notified him that we could see ISS so we all come back out for a bit more star gazing). There were jackets and gloves provided (and needed for sure for me) but make sure you dress warmly as well. The one negative of this tour was the food. They provided BLT sandwiches or sandwiches with a veggie patty. They weren't that great and there were no sides like chips. Some of the other tours that were at the visitor center at the same time as us had meals that looked much better (soup, lasagna, etc. with desserts/sides).

Our family of 4 went on this excursion with our wonderful tour guide Shoyo and had an amazing experience. Shoyo was very friendly and knowledgeable of the island. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will talk about for years to come. After ascending Mauna Kea, Shoyo took our pictures with the sunset at the summit and they were lovely. The real jewel of this trip is the stargazing experience which is absolutely breathtaking. With your naked eye you are able to see the clustered belt of the milky way galaxy. Truly incredible. Shoyo took our picture with the milky way in the background and it's like something out of a sci-fi film. Shoyo was also a veritable encyclopedia when it came to pointing out constellations and zodiacs. We highly recommend this tour to anyone considering it and if you can, request Shoyo to be your guide; you won't regret it.
