Our tour guide Stefan was amazing. He made sure everyone was comfortable. He was super knowledgeable and had a since of humor. He really made the trip special. The pictures that he took were absolutely amazing and we will be able to cherish forever.

The Views were wonderful. It was cold but the tour provided warm parkas, gloves and ski pants. Dinner was a delicious veggie sandwich, however there were no chips or brownies to go with the sandwich. Our rating is a reflection of a missed opportunity on the part of our guide. We learned all about his history (born, raised, education, family) and the company. However, the commentary on Hawaii and Mauna Kea was very light. It is a 50+ minute ride from the last pickup to the visitors center. The guide “didn’t want to bore us with constant chatter” so he gave us “our time”. During this time he chatted away with the front seat passenger. The ride home was longer because there was no commentary at all. This would have been a wonderful opportunity for the guide to share Hawaiian folk lore, history, topography. It was a missed opportunity on the guide’s part. It felt like a long ride with a small payout for a lot of money. The guide also spoke poorly about other tours on the island, one of which we had done and loved.

We loved every second of our week in Hawaii and our trip to Mauna Kea was no exception. The staff brought tons of local and professional knowledge, they had a professional photographer to capture pictures that came out better than we ever could have hoped, and the views of the sunset and the stars were AMAZING. Definitely chilly at the top, but they give you coats and hot chocolate or tea to keep you warm. We definitely learned a lot about astronomy and the constellations and I saw more stars in the sky that night than I have ever seen before in my life. We were also super lucky that Mt. Kilauea was experiencing a small eruption while we were there and the glow from the lava was visible all the way from the summit. Would recommend this trip to anyone and everyone, it was one of our absolute highlights.
