We were unsure if we wanted to take this all-day tour, thinking we could explore the island ourselves. This was so worth it. Our tour guide, Kurt, was so knowledgeable and, as a lifelong Island resident, was able to spice up the tour with personal stories. Kurt is a natural story teller spinning tales of Hawaiian kings and early settlers. As an island resident, he is able to discuss the current challenges of island living and climate change’s effects on the Hawaiian Islands.
There were some touristy stops like a Kona coffee farm and the Punalu’u Bake Shop, but they were interesting and we love coffee and pastries, so those were enjoyable. We had already done a lot of touring ourselves, but It was so nice to be able to sit and relax and let Kurt do the driving and the teaching. We especially loved seeing the volcano, the lava tube, the hike around the waterfalls capped off by the breathtaking views of the Waipi’o Cliffs. A hearty lunch is included and there are plenty of bathroom stops,
Covid note: most of the tour participants did not wear masks, which some might find a little unnerving while sitting in an enclosed tour van, but it is matter of personal choice and a couple of people did wear masks.
Finally, tips are not required, but Kurt worked so hard to give us a great, great day. Please take some extra money to tip generously.
