Despite the brutal heat and humidity, we 3 retirees took a private tour with Clay that combined Birmingham's civil rights struggle and the role that the Communist Party USA played in Birmingham during the Great Depression. You might think that these two topics are incompatible, or at least might make for a confusing tour, but with Clay's expert knowledge, guidance and great story-telling, both were seamlessly interwoven into a comprehensive, in-depth, no holds barred, thorough deep dive. We learned so much. The intersection of events, physical places, and historic figures were found at Boutwell (Municipal) Auditorium, Linn (Central) Park, the Lyric Theater, Hosea Hudson, Eleanor Roosevelt, Angela Davis, and even a Red-baiting Bull Connor. The “Fight for Rights” tour would have been excellent in and of itself but when a straight line is drawn from CPUSA’S mine, mill, and farm organizing, protests, and campaigns of the 1920s and 30s to Kelly Ingram Park, the KKK, and the “Four Little Girls,” the historical connection was pretty clear, and pretty intense. Birmingham might be a “young” city but it has enough “past” to be a lot older. If that tour was any indication, would highly recommend any tour with Red Clay Tours, Clay does not disappoint! (And he thoughtfully made sure we did not walk too much in the heat and when we did, we were always in the shade). Thanks!

My husband and I booked onto this tour before arriving in Birmingham and are so glad we did. Clay (our tour guide) picked us up at the hotel, which was helpful for us being new in town! During the next few hours, Clay (and his father who drove the bus for the rest of the tour) took our group round different sites of Birmingham explaining key things that had happened and how they fitted in with the rest of the civil rights movement in the country, as well as how the city of Birmingham has changed over the years within the South. He was very thorough and informative and it is clear he really knows the history very well. He encouraged questions and took us to places we wouldn’t have seen without being on the tour. We come from outside the US, and so have limited knowledge of US history but the tour was so well explained this didn’t matter at all. There were also opportunities for taking photos. We would definitely recommend this tour to other travellers as it gives you an insight into Birmingham and its history which you wouldn’t be able to get otherwise. Red Clay Tours also offer other guided tours we would have been interested in taking if we had not been moving on to Atlanta so soon!

Being originally from Washington state, my awareness of civil rights history was basically limited to movies and American history. This tour gives you an up-close picture of American Civil Rights History. Michael was our tour guide, his son Clay is the owner. The civil rights history of Birmingham is significant and telling. Michael and Clay have created an experience that gives a great picture of the civil rights history from the end of the civil war to 1965. Its so well done. Do yourself a favor and educate yourself.
