Amazing tour of the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham. Started off with Clay picking us up from hotel and a quick ride to the meeting place to pick up the others. Clay is very knowledgeable of all Civil Rights History not just Birmingham. He did a great job of putting us in the past and getting a sense of what Birmingham was like in the 50-60s. He explained all about the struggles and scars that Birmingham went through. He also did a great job of pointing out landmarks and tying in how Birmingham has never quite healed from social and political obstacles. It is not an uplifting tour, but a tour of the facts. It wasn't a lot of walking since clay drove us around for most of it. But you need to bring waters because Birmingham is hot. We have been on other tours in the past and this is a must do.

Hey Hokie, Thanks for giving us such a nice review. We are glad y'all stopped in town, all the way from Virginia, to try out a Red Clay tour. As you mention, it's not an uplifting tour, but we try to be as honest as possible about Birmingham, even if it isn't a nice thing to hear. Thanks for visiting, Clay

My girls and I (ages 10 and 13) so greatly enjoyed the afternoon with Clay. This is the first review I have ever written, but this gentleman is such a professional that I feel it necessary. Don't hesitate to take your children out, he is a natural teacher (and is in fact educated as a teacher). He naturally spoke to their level and kept me interested at the same time. I feel like the experience was invaluable to all. There are only a handful of experiences in your life that truly expand your thinking to a point that you realize you have been changed. I learned more than I ever hoped to, and I think the girls have had their world view expanded in just an afternoon with Clay. His tour is top notch and he is a great human.

What a fantastic tour! This is definitely a must do if you’re interested in the civil rights movement and only have a day or two in Birmingham! My tour guide, Clay, picked me up and as it turns out I was the only one on the tour! What’s good about the company is that they still offer tours for just one person which nowhere else in America seems to do. Clay told me so much about the history of Birmingham and Alabama in three hours right down to the finest details; I love learning about history so it was fascinating from start to finish. As well as some key sites which played a huge roll in the movement, we also visited inner city neighbourhoods which, during the 50s and 60s, where segregated all black or all white. It was an excellent tour and what makes it so unique is that Clay spent 6 months reading books and articles and watching documentaries about the civil rights history in order to do these tours! After the tour, Clay offered to drop me off anywhere I wanted to go and I told him I was going to this BBQ place for its unique food. He told me that it was okay but not the best and he recommended Saw’s Soul Kitchen. He was telling me all about the unique Alabama food there as he actually offers a BBQ tour and Saw’s is his first stop on the tour. He was kind enough to not only take me there but he asked for the special which he offers to his tour group and sat and ate lunch with me before dropping me back where I needed to be. The food was all delicious and I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to try it if it hadn’t been for Clay as it wasn’t within walking distance. I had a fantastic time and I can’t thank Clay enough!
