My husband and I recently went to Alabama for a civil rights trip -- Birmingham, Selma, and Montgomery. We were on the fence whether to do a tour in Birmingham or see sites on our own. Don't overthink it -- just book this tour! You'll be so glad you did. Without the tour, we would not have gotten the insights we did into Birmingham's early communist movements, the history of each home on "Dynamite hill" that led to the "Bombingham" moniker, the 18th street boundary that marked the black versus white sections of town, and the incredible activism of Fred Shuttlesworth. It was so meaningful to learn from a local who loves his city and wants it to grapple honestly with its past. He left us with a sense of the struggle -- how many people had to strive on so many fronts to achieve lasting change. This is easily the best tour my husband and I have taken, and we travel a lot. I wish every American city had something like it. In terms of logistics, we were 2 people out of a tour group of 7. Mike picked us up from our hotel in the morning. We ended about 3.5 hours later right outside the 16th Street Baptist Church and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. So after a quick lunch, we saw those two sites before heading south to Selma.

The Civil Rights Tour was a powerful, honest and personal. Seeing the sights with an knowledgeable guide makes it so much more meaningful and memorable and you learn so much more than you ever could from reading signs or excepts from a guidebook. I recommend this tour wholeheartedly.

This tour is a must do if you're in Birmingham and want to learn a bit more about the beginnings of the Civil Rights era. Clay was a phenomenal story teller. His passion for Birmingham and its history is evident. I'm sure every other tour with Clay would exhibit the same fervor and energy. Clay pulled double duty, serving as driver and tour guide, and never missed a beat. He gave incredibly thoughtful and comprehensive anecdotes on each location we visited and answered all of the ancillary questions that came up. I learned details about each location that I could not have learned on my own. Even folks who were either from the area or had familial ties to the area could attest to the accuracy and also learning facts they never knew. With each landmark stop, you could not help but pause and reflect due to the weight of the situations and tragic events, and as Clay recalled some moments he would preface it by acknowledging how depressing the tour could be, but how it was an absolute necessity to acknowledge the truth. You knew Clay's position on history and he made sure you left with a new or changed perspective. Icing on the cake for me, some of the proceeds are donated to charities in Birmingham. I could not have asked for a better tour!
