Our teacher (one of 5, and also apparently the founder of the company) was a positive, likeable fellow who fell in love with graffiti in Argentina then returned home to NYC to start the NY graffiti tour business, then latterly start teaching lessons. After a whirlwind 5 min history of graffiti (the whole lesson is only 60mins), he discussed paints to use, nozzles, and styles, then went on to demo technique. Almost immediately we were donning gloves (and the few extra shirts two people got to use as coverups) picking out our favourite colours and practicing our "tag" on sheets of canvas he had stapled to the walls of the small indoor Brooklyn Graff studio. He covered the various stages of design and walked us through execution. He helped keep everyone on track and moving towards the goal by doing some outlining (of a word of our choosing) which we then practiced filling in and blending (definitely a skill that needs more than 60 minutes to perfect). His assistant was a (too??) enthusiastic character of a veteran graffiti artist who was perhaps a little too involved (though thankfully with another group). Though we were quite pleased with our canvas for a first effort, we ended up not taking it home as we are travelling a lot in the week to come, but we were given various options for it being sent to us, or packaged in a $10 travel tube roll for us to take with, which was nice. In all, a very positive experience. As an added bonus, the area around Graff Studio in Brooklyn has a lot of street art, so we did a mini walk around the (industrial) neighbourhood in the 30 minutes before the class and saw some inspirational pieces.

My friends and I were doing a whirlwind tour of museums in Manhattan like the MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim, but since we were spending our evenings in Brooklyn, we also wanted to experience its street art. We walked around Bushwick and were just as impressed the art truly made for the public. Our workshop of tagging and making our own graffiti on a canvas was the perfect counterpoint to taking in all the content of the artists of NYC. Do something different and don't just be fed what the art snobs define as art, but also learn what's it's like to have that impulse to create and make. Our instructor Leif demonstrated how street art is made and would then put the aerosol cans into our hands. The workshop is only an hour and so that's not a lot of time for participants to actually create graffiti from beginning to end, and so our instructor did most of the design while we filled in his outline. It was still super fun.

You're group works on one large canvas, so understand that everyone doesn't walk out with their own piece of art. Also, it seems obvious, but it takes time to dry when done. Ours wasn't totally dry for several hours after, so make sure you plan on heading home afterward. Even with those caveats, this was by far the highlight of my family's visit to NYC. A real street artist guides you along with just enough help to make the end result look awesome. You'll end up with about a 5x4 foot canvas that can be rolled up when dry. Really unique fun experience.
