I rented a bike for the day with the intention to bike around Central Park. The gears were not working properly and the bike was overall in a very poor condition. After a mile the chain broke. When returning the bike I told them about the gears but they just put the bike back with all the other bikes (meaning that it will be rented out again without the gears being fixad). When I talked to the staff I was told that no refunds were given. Only a new free rental. Since the majority that rents bikes are tourists with limited possibilities to use that type of refund the set up is more or less a scam...

My husband and I were first time in New York and planned to walk to Central Park. By chance we came across a bicycle rental and we were asked to make cycling in the park. We agreed, although it was a little excitement. We were given new bikes, the guide was very pleasant conversationalist. And we never regretted that took cycling. It was interesting, informative and incredibly beautiful !.

All around Central Park there are hoards of people with signs for bike rental. Yes, it's cheap - you can get a bike for the entire day for $20. However, you need to walk about 7 blocks to get the bike. It took four-five attempts before they got a bike with a seat that would adjust low enough for me (I'm 5'). Most of their employees speak very little English so communication was inconsistent. You will need to leave a piece of ID (driver's licence etc.) that they keep until you return the bike. Some bikes are in better repair than others so make sure you ride up the block and test the gears and brakes before you leave. After the hassle was done and we made our way to Central Park, the ride around the park was beautiful. I highly recommend bicycling through the park. It's approximately a 10 km loop around the perimeter and there are a few other oath options. You must walk the bike on the smaller inside paths. It was a perfect way to spend some time in then calmer area of Manhattan, you just may want to consider pricing the rentals right at the south west corner and decide which option works best for you.
