An hour with a guided, horse-drawn carriage seemed a decent way to go about getting acquainted with a distinct, historic, and beautiful city. The people at front desk who arranged our booking and got us situated in the carriage were all pleasant and accommodating. Our guide was where the experience unraveled.
As other reviews have noted, I found this was a “historical tour” offered through a confederacy-tilted prism. The constant references to “The War for Southern Independence“ had me wanting to ask “whose independence, exactly?” This seemed an ironic renaming of The Civil War, given who was afforded the least independence in the south at that time and who was fighting to keep it that way. I felt subsequent commentary continually tilted towards “what the history books don’t tell you” with a confederate-sympathizing lean which culminated in a direct reference to Abraham Lincoln as a “mass murderer.”
If you’re interested in this type of version of events surrounding the American Civil War, have at it, I suppose. I was not. Even without the above content, I found the tour commentary to be just OK—too many references to the cost of properties and not enough interesting, objective history of the area. I would not have signed on as a paying customer had I known what was in store, and I certainly won’t be back. Were I to entertain the thought of doing anything like this again, I’d endeavor to pre-screen my guide somehow first.
