I recently moved to Alexandria, VA a little over 3 years ago, and although I've known the DMV area in general is a hub for history and culture, I've never taken the time to explore my own backyard. The Manumission Tour is perfect for the local daytripper or the tourist coming from outside the area. I had no idea Alexandria was such a vibrantly historical center of African American roots and it was inspiring, empowering, and motivating to learn about the path traveled to the United States. I would highly recommend this tour due to the historical sites and compelling facts not typically taught in school. It is a walking tour, so be comfortable and prepared to walk about 1 mile. The tour ends near the Alexandria waterfront which is a perfect way to end the day, grab some food, enjoy some shopping, and reflect on the incredible history gathered by the Manumission tour!

I've lived in Alexandria for seven years now and was excited to hear about this unique opportunity to learn more about my culture outside of a museum. The tour with Manumission shed a light on the rich history, struggle and contributions Africans and African Americans have made on our Port City and beyond. I've taken the walking tour twice and each time I learn something new. Truly a great experience I would recommend!

I found the Manumission Tour to be very informative as I had no clue there were so many African American historical sites in old town Alexandria. You must try this tour out. Also, the guide was very knowledgeable.
