My daughter (who lives in the City) and I took a 2-hour GoCar trip during a recent visit. I've done Segways, Duck Tours, Big Buses, etc. Nothing compares to the GoCar experience. San Francisco is a highly tourable City due to its compact size. Thus, in 2-3 hours, you can see a lot of what San Francisco has to offer. There are enough choices based upon your interests that you'll likely hit your choice for major tourist spots during the drive. We took the Golden Gate tour which gave us a number of opportunities for photo ops at beaches, overlooks, and notable attractions like Lombard Street and Coit Tower. Much of the fun comes from the car, a modified three-wheel motorcycle with a fiberglass body. You turn using handle bars, accelerate with the right hand throttle, and break with handbreaks like you would with a bike. Pretty much anyone can learn to drive this since there's no shifting. I felt comfortable in less than five minutes. The car is NOT for the big and/or tall due to its size. It's also a bumpy ride so it may not be suited to someone with back issues, etc. You have a choice of a 50cc or 150cc engine. Get the bigger engine despite the added cost. You'll need the extra power to go up hills. Also, I paid for the insurance and, while I didn't need it, the condition of the cars suggests a fair number of people have at least minor encounters with obstacles and fiberglass can crack easily. The GPS guided tour worked amazingly well (but ensure you have the right language before you get too far from your starting point). Nearly always we were given advance notice of turns, etc. And the general tour information was interesting and engaging. Be prepared, however, for some real street driving and hill climbs.

We did not feel safe in the middle of busy traffic at San Francisco. My wife and I rented a GoCar for a tour of SanFrancisco. After a quick introductory video, we were at the wheels of a larger GoCar. The GPS was NOT very proactive in providing guidance among the tall buildings in San Francisco. In addition, given the construction areas around the city, the GPS directions were often confusing. In addition, given the size of the GoCars, one is consistently at the level of the exhaust from the cars and busses and the exhaust fumes from the other vehicles really is not a very pleasant experience at all. Finally, given the small size of the GoCars, we did not feel safe at all in driving it around the city. The busy traffic with lots of buses, trucks and cars in San Francisco, made us feel highly exposed and vulnerable in the little GoCar. We cut our trip short and returned the GoCar prematurely since it was not a pleasant experience at all for us.

As first-timers in SF, before we did our GoCar tour, we really had no idea how much this city had to offer in the way of attractions. On a warm day, this tour is so much fun! If you're confident in driving the car around amongst traffic, it's a fun way to explore San Francisco, without the annoyances that come with touring in a big group. We were able to go at our own pace, stop where we want to, and spend more time at the attractions we were interested in. The GPS is really easy to follow and they give you hard copy map to help you if you get off track. The historical information provided by the GPS was also very interesting and gave as a great overview of the city and it's attractions. We did the longer route and did the detour up to Twin Peaks. We also had the faster model car. The ride itself took almost 3 hours and we didn't even stop at some of the attractions. You could easily spend a full day with this thing. The car itself is very easy to drive and maneuver. You just have to be aware of the fact that you're a lot smaller than the average vehicle in traffic and therefore not as visible to others. We certainly didn't have any problems. There are enough of these GoCars bombing around town every day that I'm sure the lcoals are pretty used to watching out for them. It was worth every penny and I cannot think of a better way to to learn about and explore San Fran!
