It saddens me to write this review, because this is a fun experience, but the people who run this business are horrible.
I've live locally and use GoCar when I have friends in town, however, after this past rental, I will NEVER NEVER NEVER use them again nor would I ever recommend them to anyone.
First of all, and this isn't specific to this past weekend, but the navigation isn't great. The notice of when to turn isn't always long enough in advance, the little cuts to save time are often confusing, and weirdly, the volume on certain directions is lower than others. Sot he volume is either too loud or too soft and it makes it easy to miss your turn. Again, I'm local, so I can manage, but I really feel for people who aren't and don't know where they are going. Especially if your sidekick is a kid who is clueless to direction. :) Also - you'd think those things would be nimble given their size. They are NOT. My VW wagon has a better U Turn radius than this piece of crap. They also don't back up, so if you end up in a tight situation, good luck.
Getting back to Columbus Day weekend (the last time I used this service) - my friend and I rented the car in the AM. (Pro Tip If you Decide to Use this Crap Ass Company: If you decide to rent at 10am when they first open, make sure you get there about 15 mins early. They don't staff well for the opening crowd and if you aren't first in line, you wont' actually get in your car until maybe 10:30 or 10:45. Key is to be first in line.) We got in our car and went on our merry way. I knew that it was Fleet Week and the Columbus Day parade was going on, so I knew it would be busy, but I wasn't aware that GoCar's location would be affected by road closures. And do you think anyone told us about the road closures? No! So when it was time to take the car back, after sitting in crazy traffic, trying to navigate a car that is NOT nimble, and having sore hands from holding the hand breaks while stuck in gridlock traffic going down hill, we literally could not get back to the rental location. All of the roads leading to the location were closed. We called and asked what to do and they said we had to just wait it out. After speaking to an SFPD officer, he said we'd have to wait at least 1.5 hours until the parade was over. We literally had no where to go, no where to park, and those cars only have about 4 hours worth of gas in them. This was a bad bad situation people! Luckily i knew a little dead end street where we could at least kinda pull over and turn the engine off. We were also not the only cars stuck in this situation - many people had opted for the 3 hour tour and were now stranded in a mess of traffic and people.
After continuing to call this place again and again to try and find out what to do, I got ahold of someone and they came to us to pick up the car. This was about an hour+ after we were supposed to take the car back. No apologies, nothing. The only thing they offered was to not charge for the extra hours. WTF??? That's not an offer, that's table stakes. I saw reviews on Yelp that said some people got a full refund. We did not. I called and asked. Told them I was a repeat customer but they didn't care. I will never use them again.
If you decide to take your chances, please call 311 and make sure there are no road closures in San Francisco that day. This is actually the second time I used this service when there wer road closures - the last time the closure was around the Golden Gate Bridge for a political rally. Their navigation is not based on current situations and cannot account for any closure (expected or not). I feel for people who are from out of town and don't know their way around. It's not easy and these jerks will not help you.
