I appreciate the gifting and practice that has gone into these young peoples' performances ... especially on certain feats. That was obvious! I pray they can grow and utilize even more creative ideas in their future shows. But as a former dancer/director I found some things lacking. Transitions between movements were sometimes a bit messy (losing extension of the legs and the feet, for instance) ... and some of the performers were just getting by on their movements, but they performed better when they focused on their featured element. The young man who juggled was excellent, the Chinese female dancer was very well trained and beautiful to watch. Some of the acrobatics were good, as were the spinning plates. But the small amount of performers in general was strange ... as there was little coordinated/synchronized pieces, and less impact. The music strangely just faded out in some places, and there were some awkward pauses. Some elements felt like "fillers" to get the next set placed on the stage, rather than an element that was imaginative and well thought out. When the performers spoke to the audience, it was often weak ... and it felt like the audience was having to work at supporting the performers (as at the beginning the emcee so strongly exhorted us to do). The lack of interesting costumes was odd, too (even though the women were usually costumed). I understand the guys wanting to look "street", but at certain points, some costuming would have helped elevate the vibe. Even though I didn't expect a Cirque Du Soliel level show, I must be spoiled by it. But I also have my own background of perfectionism in performing that certainly influences my opinion. Having said this, my heart goes out to the performers, and I want them to win. There may be Covid and traveling issues for the performers from overseas ... and that could be at the heart of it. I hope they can bring the level up in the future, as they ARE talented.
