We decided at the last minute to join the tour. It was 7:30am and the tour we wanted to take was leaving at 9am. We didn't have a car on the island so Denise even had one of their naturalists Deb come pick us out at our hotel on her way to work. It was really chilly at the start, but they provide jackets and windbreakers as well as binoculars. By the end, we were so glad to have done this. We ended up seeing 3 orcas from the L pod hunting near San Juan Island, harbor porpoises, a bald eagle, and sunbathing harbor seals, not to mention the beautiful scenery. The crew was really knowledgeable about orcas, explaining the family lineage of resident orca pods and the 3 orcas we saw in particular.

I can't say enough wonderful things about Dan and the beautiful journey we had miles out to sea. We saw a beautiful humpback whale, minke whales, seals and eagles. I know it's never a guarantee, but there were no orcas sightings on our trip - maybe the wrong time of year. There were only a few tiny things that I mention just as feedback to Eclipse Charters. We booked our reservations well in advance, probably 6 weeks. At the time we only had 3 in our party but about a week after I first booked it, I called back to add a 4th person to our party. They said no problem and we were very pleased. As it got closer to our trip to Orcas, about a week out, I called to check to see if there were binoculars provided (which they are!) and I reconfirmed out party of 4. All was well. I called the day before our scheduled voyage to get specific directions down to the dock and again reconfirmed our party of 4. When we got down to the dock on the day of, they only had us down for 3 people in our party. The woman at the desk was nice, sort of, but I felt that she was annoyed that our party # did not match what they had for us. Oh well. Next little thing was after we were out in water, cruising out to Juan de Fuca, we were sitting up on the front of the boat and had a lovely chat with the nature guide. She told us we should go up on top and check out the view, I asked if I could bring the small red seat cushion with me and she said no problem, just for me to bring it back down later. I got up on top of the boat and was enjoying the view and the nature guide up there came up to me and said that I could not have that cushion up there. I thought it was very rude, instead of just talking to me, she barked an order to take it back down to the front of the boat. Oh well...again. Lastly! The day after our voyage, we were leaving and waiting in line for the ferry. I went into the gift shop just above where Eclipse Charters is and asked if they had a restroom. There was a woman there that said, they have one just inside Eclipse and I should just ask to use it. I went down and nicley asked if I could use the restroom as someone had advised that I might be able to use it. The woman at the desk said no, that it was not for public use. Ok. I attempted to say that I was on the charter the day before and we were leaving in just a few minutes for the ferry but was then asked "well, who said you could use the bathroom...we don't let the public use it". I walked out, feeling like, wow, I paid good money to go on their voyage and it didn't even warrant use of the bathroom. Oh well... and that was it. I left with a slightly bad taste in my mouth about Eclipse. I am on Orcas quite a few times during the year and manage a vacation rental there... I am not sure if I would completely feel 100% about referring Eclipse to others. I don't expect super over the top nice people all the time on these types of excursions, but if they want people to come back or make referrals, they should brush up a little on customer service and think about what may affect a persons overall experience. It shouldn't be a deal breaker to use a seat cushion or go to the bathroom.

we had the privilege to ride with Eclipse Charters on May 11th. It was a wonderful day out on the ocean. We were able to see bald eagles flying in the wild, sea lions, blue herring, and of course, ORCA Whales! The usual pods weren't in the area, but Dan and Denise took us 35 miles into Canadian waters to meet up with 3 packs of transient whales. They made the trip a real blessing, and even brought us jackets and ginger candies for my wife's sea sickness. I strongly suggest you hit them up when going through Washington!
