Dr. Wagner's Honey Island Swamp Tours
Enjoy this Louisiana Swamp experience — a unique outdoor adventure that is safe, organized, fun, and educational. Upon arrival at the starting location on the West Pearl River, in Slidell, Louisiana, venture in to the gift shop overlooking the Tupelo and Cypress swamp and check in for the tour. Be sure to take a look out of the back window to see if any backyard guests are lurking in the murky waters below. Don’t forget to use the restrooms before embarking on this 2-hour tour throughout nearly 70,000 acres of the Honey Island Swamp, a permanently protected wildlife preserve. While walking down the dock, embrace the excitement of seeing the moss hanging from the gnarled cypress trees and the sweet smell of wild azaleas in the air. There's an undeniable eagerness to explore. Listen intently to the captain’s tales of pirates, Bigfoot, and prehistoric creatures roaming the region while entering the primitive beauty of the Honey Island Swamp. Keep an eye out for alligators, herons, egrets, deer, feral hogs, nutria, raccoons, otters, turtles, and frogs — an abundance of wildlife along the banks and the in the murky waters. Or look up and out for bald eagles, owls, osprey, and other waterfowl soaring through the skies. They could be visible one second and gone the next. Those touring Honey Island can easily see why Louisiana is known as the Fisherman’s Paradise. Passing through the Cajun village, where local fisherman reside, see them catching bluegill, redear sunfish, largemouth bass, and warmth. Thousands of pounds of crawfish are caught in these waters every season as well. All the tour boats are inspected and approved by the US Coast Guard. These small, custom-built, flat-bottom boats transport approximately 20-24 individuals each. They are operated by experienced local guides who interact with the guests and make the trip both enjoyable and exciting. With the journey back up the river, the captain leads the way to the original departure location to close out the tour. NOTE: This option does NOT include transportation to and from New Orleans. Please select "Honey Island Swamp Tour with Pick-up from New Orleans," should you need hotel pick up.

My family and I enjoyed seeing all the awesome landscape and the animals we saw. Captain Hunter was so great. He was very informative about the vegetation and especially the animals. He made sure that if we didn't spot the animals, he made sure to get us close and personal so we could see them. I highly recommend going on an adventure at Honey Island Swamp. Thanks again Captain Hunter!!!

I was really disappointed by this tour in general, but even more so based on all the glowing reviews I had read talking about how interesting and informative the captains were and how humorous they were, the great stories they told and how well they engaged children etc. One of the reviews even mentioned that they didn't see much wildlife, but it didn't matter because the captain was so pleasant and entertaining. That made me choose this company. I figured even if we didn't see much, we'd still have a good time. I was wrong. We didn't see much and we didn't have a good time. My first surprise was the tour spent more than half the time on a muddy river (12 miles roundtrip) and very little time in an actual swamp. Captain Tony spent much of the tour playing on his phone, even while driving the boat which made us feel unsafe. If we asked questions he would answer (although I asked one question and he never heard because he was busy on his phone...all of the others on the boat heard as we all looked at him waiting for an answer that never came...). The actual time we spent in the swamp watching him feed wildlife was very enjoyable, but alas, very brief. Some of that time there, we were near other boats from the same company and you could hear their captains engaging well with their passengers and telling interesting stories. Our captain even told us to listen in to the other captains as they know so much. We passed other competing tour company boats and they all appeared to have great captains as well. Captain Tony wasn't unpleasant, he just seemed like he didn't want to be there, wasn't engaged at all (except with his phone) and acted like he was doing the bare minimum to get a job done and get out of there. We've been on many tours like this and usually the guides act like they love their job and enjoy showing tourists their world. That wasn't the case here. The tour was 30 minutes shorter than advertised which was frustrating also, as we deliberately chose this tour because it was longer than others. I left very frustrated and disappointed by the experience and wished I hadn't wasted my money or my time driving from NOLA for such a subpar tour. While it sounds like many others have had great times at Honey Island Swamp Tours, I certainly couldn't recommend them based on my experience. I would not return or encourage others to go either. A truly sad disappointment for our family.

Captain Hunter was an amazing guide! He was very entertaining and informative. He really took his time showing us all the amazing things in the swamp while other tours zoomed past us. We loved seeing all the wildlife and plant life and learning all about life on the river. I would highly recommend this tour!
