Key West Aquarium

Tours offered every half hour throughout the day. (See below for tour types) Shark feedings occur daily at 11am, 1pm, 3pm, and 4:30pm. Touch Tank/Aquarium History: Learn the aquarium history (first opened air aquarium in the United States), the importance of the frescos. Atlantic Shores Interactive Feed: Learn the importance of the mangrove eco system, allow guest the opportunity to feed some of our large game and tropical fish while discussing the variety of fish in the exhibit. Shark Interactive Feeding: Guides will explain the importance of sharks to our waters while allowing guests to feed and touch a live shark! Sea Turtle Conservation Tour: Learn the Aquarium’s role in the conservation efforts of these species. Stingray interactive Feedings: Interact with our stingrays by feeding and petting these animals. The Atlantic Shores Exhibit is a cross section of a near shore mangrove environment. The 50,000 gallon tank holds a variety of tropical fish and game fish.

We had a bad start with the ticket receptionist who had a horrible attitude. She tried to upsell us to a bundle for the aquarium and a conch train tour ride. We asked how much the bundle was compared to the individual prices and her response was "I'd have to look that up". Okay... we said flabbergasted that this information wasn't readily available. After persisting we were told $65 for a party of 5. Sounded like a decent price so we proceeded with the purchase. However the credit card slip total was for $325! When we asked why it was $325 she then states oh it's $65 per person! We ended up getting a refund which took another 15 minutes and lots of eye rolls and deep sighs from the receptionist... After purchasing just aquarium tickets we entered the aquarium, which is basically one small room with a few fish and a sea turtle. Very underwhelming! Took about 5 minutes to walk through the attraction. I'm all for marine conservation but this isn't it and is more of a tourist trap. Not worth the price of admission at all.

Hello, We were sorry to read you did not enjoy your time in the Key West Aquarium. I would like to offer you additional information regarding your comments. We are privately operated and privately owned, unlike most aquariums in the United States. Other aquariums such as the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, The National Aquarium in Baltimore, and others like them are much grander facilities due to the facts, they are either supported by the government or by a foundation and are in much more populous areas. Our aquarium content is restricted to species of fish indigenous to the Florida Keys only. Because of our desire to keep our presentation confined to local specimens, we are faced with the prospect of doing all of our own collecting. We have staffed the aquarium with guides who give narrated tours of the entire facility on a scheduled basis as opposed to a ‘tour on your own’ type of facility. We feel that having well versed guides makes it more interesting to our guests and offers a more personal experience. We are constantly adding to and updating our exhibits, refreshing paint and decor where possible. However, we are a historic aquarium in a historic building, hosting live animals. The care and wellbeing of these animals takes precedence over any updates or modernizing that could endanger their lives. This is a very small aquarium at Mallory Square, but a nice enough stop if you are looking for a quiet hour or so. Interesting to view feeding time. There is also a small tank to touch some of the creatures which kids will enjoy.

The highlight was the feeding time in the mangrove ecosystem tank, and the narration that went with it. It's a small aquarium, but we were expecting that. We enjoyed watching the local sea life up close. It's really neat that it focuses on local wildlife in particular.
