If you are interested in the history and flora of Kauai then this is an excellent gardens to visit. The 45+ mins stroll through the gardens has excellent guided, or self-guided interpretation that gives you a deep appreciation for the Kauai that was and the Kauai that now exists. The gardens can be accessed anytime by the north shore shuttle from Hanalei or by required reservation to park there and visit (you will not get in if you just drive there, even if the parking lot has spaces). The road to Limahuli and Ha'ena Beach State park is a narrow two lane road with several single lane bridges. It passes by several spectacular rustic beaches many of which have ample parking, but Ha'ena and Tunnels Beach's can be parked up quickly.

here the varius specimens are close together at the beginning of the garden highlighting great tropical species. They offer a self guided tour in a booklet that is easy to follow. It is a pretty good walk and goes uphill the first half and then down so be prepared. They offer complimentary walking sticks which are helpful if you are older.

Made reservation the night before to park and paid for tickets online. The parking lot is tiny and there is no other place to park around that area. If you take the shuttle, I believe you don’t need a reservation (but double check this). We did the self guided tour. They provided us with bug spray and a walking stick. The total hike is 0.75 miles and it took us just <2 hours (we strolled, took many photos, read the guide book - included in admission and rested). Since we were walking so slow, the steps and slight inclines didn’t bother us at all! They have water stations every so often but we brought our own. Bathrooms are a the base where the gift shop is. Overall a great experience and it was interesting to see and learn about so many unique plants.
