On a whim, given nice weather, I booked the AIANY Around Manhattan Bridge Infrastructure Tour, which is an around 2.5 hour narrated bridge and architectural tour circumnavigating Manhattan. This was SUCH a enjoyable experience, given the professionalism of the tour narrator, John (a professor at Parsons) and the crew. John provided snippets of info on the architectural sites in an engaging style that was easy to understand and substantive, but not overly chatty. The crew was attentive and friendly. On this day, the tour was not fully booked, which gave guests room to spread out on the boat. Though I live in New York, I still learned a lot during the tour and made many mental notes on additional places to explore. Bravo Prof. John and Classic Harbor Line!

We happened to get a beautiful spring day for this 2 hour 45 minute cruise counter clockwise around Manhattan. The narration for the cruise was delivered by a very knowledgeable local architect who obviously enjoys his work. If I did hear more about “this building was designed by the firm of X, Y, and Z” than I cared for, the level of architectural detail wasn’t overwhelming for a layman like myself. He included lots of (to me) interesting information about zoning’s influences on Manhattan, historical trends, and Robert Moses. I’ve lived in the area for a long time and enjoy learning about the “how we got here” urban planning questions. By the same token, I guess you should probably pick a different cruise if you aren’t interested in hearing a knowledgeable guide for 165 minutes. The boat is comfortable and clean. The servers were excellent. You get one free drink and a “Mediterranean buffet” which was fine. The glass walls and roof make sitting inside surprisingly enjoyable, there is also outdoor seating.
