We went on the Brooklyn Walking Tour from Pod 51 Hotel, and had a fantastic time. Sonya, our tour guide, was super cool. Answered everyone's questions, shared a lot of great history and anecdotes, and had a strong knowledge about the area. Sonya was exceptional about making sure the whole group was always together, and no one in our group of 20 was being left behind. At one of our stops in Dumbo, she took a group photo and emailed it to all of us right away, for a very nice personal touch. She also helped us learn to use the subway, and gave us directions to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and get to Ground Zero. Highly recommend Streetwise New York Tours, because they do group tours as well as private tours!

We went on the 4.5 hour tour of Brooklyn. We were able to see quite a bit in that amount of time. Andrew was fantastic. He described the tour as "a friend of a friend walking you around NYC who happens to know stuff" and that's exactly how I'd describe it. This is definitely more "off the beaten path" than your normal tours, which is something I love. Not sure it would be great for kids, because it is a lot of walking.

This fully customizable tour is terrific, and a great value. Note: we actually visited July 2014, but Trip Advisor's drop-down didn't let us select any 2014 dates. We booked a 3-hr walking tour starting in Greenwich Village and winding through Soho and Little Italy. Our guide Daniel was great, giving historical info as well as neighborhood trivia regarding certain features of buildings, and we stopped along the way to enjoy delicious tastes of the neighborhoods. It was really hot that day, so we enjoyed some gelato from a cart vendor, some great street tacos, and later the best cannoli I have ever had (at Palermo in Little Italy). We even got to stop in at a funky shop or two. But I wish to stress that our guide never directed or pressured us to visit any particular shop or vendor -- he just pointed out what was available nearby, and we decided for ourselves.
