While this is difficult to write, our expectations were so high and we were looking forward to this cruise. This is the dinner sailing cruise my daughter picked out. We were greeted by the crew and felt almost welcomed. We were with another couple from Australia and a family of four that had adult children. We were excited to have a full dinner(as advertised) and cultural teachings for the hefty price of $220 a person. We were served on wooden dishes that we were told were authentic to the Polynesian theme. I am so cool with cultural authenticity. We travel the world seeking these things. There was a weird oil-like sheen in the coconut water-filled cups. I was second-guessing but we both drank them. We ordered water the second time around thinking maybe it was the coconut water. The water had the same sheen. Later in the cruise, my daughter felt sick but not seasick, sick to her stomach. I am thinking it was the treated chemicals on the dishes. We are on boats a lot so seasickness isn't really a normal factor. Then we were served an appetizer-sized dinner that was an ounce of smoked fish, an ounce of poke, a few pieces each of coconut, taro, mango, and another fruit. When I expressed confusion at the size of our dinner, they said don't worry you can have more. When we asked for more, they literally took our wooden appetizer plates(my daughter still had poke), seemed annoyed and confused, then presented us with cut-in-half pieces of fruit and coconut, what seemed to be chicken instead of fish(I got a chicken-like bone) and took the poke completely off my daughter's plate. Which clearly means they do not have supplies for seconds. $220 a head people...She was so upset that she didn't get to finish the one thing she liked on this tiny wooden plate. We literally were flabbergasted and looked at each other and asked..."wait, this is our $220 dinner??" When there was a sign of polite concern, the energy of the hula girl( who from this point was magical) changed. (You are in the service industry). She definitely made us feel excluded. That was unnecessary as consumer discomfort while people were disappointed with their portions and expectations. No one was rude. It was just an absolute shock that dinner was served on a 2" by 6" oiled wooden dish and drinks were in oiled wooden cups. The dishes were pretty cool minus the oil slick. The cultural part of the cruise was awesome. We learned a lot about a super interesting culture, saw dolphins, learned ancient chants, and learned so many amazing things with the boat and how the Polynesians sailed. During the sunset chant, you have to constantly look up from the paper so you don't miss the actual sunset. There is no photography/video allowed during chants out of respect and there also is no alcohol(or dinner) on this cruise. This tour really has something special. It would be a hit-and-run completely if there was an actual $220)dinner served, like advertised in their listing. When you are cruising back into port, you are like begging to get off the boat...They put out a basket for tips for their staff. I was absolutely shocked that they would ask for a tip after we already spent $440 and now have to spend money on an uber to go eat DINNER at another restaurant because we were still hungry. We walked to our Uber stop after the tour, with the Australian couple. They agreed that the cultural experience was amazing but they were going to go have an actual dinner. We ran into the son, from Austin, from the family of 4 at the airport and asked him what he thought. He said his family went to Olive Garden after. They were happy with the cultural demonstrations but they also left hungry. I am a travel agent that books excursions all over the world as well as experience excursions so I know if I can refer the excursion to my clients and my clients will be happy. I will not be referring this excursion to my clients. YOU HAVE A GREAT IDEA HERE! JUST FEED PEOPLE! This excursion would be 5 stars if you were to serve an actual dinner, like advertised, and not be served appetizer portions of subpar, easily chopped raw food on chemically treated dishes. Serve a steak! Or Lobster! Not an ounce of smoked fish...
