Our driver “Old Gary” (yes he told us to call him that) was such a treat! Seriously. He was friendly, helpful, and super informative. Just top notch. He’s a talker and answered all our questions happily. The glacial tour was the highlight for me, though the animals and scenic Seward Highway were also great! We did this little day trip for our 5 year anniversary and it did not disappoint!
A few tips:
Bring bug spray, sunglasses, and sunscreen! And definitely your camera!
I use a manual wheelchair and am also ambulatory for short distances. Some parts would have been really difficult to get to had I not had my cane too. The glacial boat only had stairs on the way to the top deck, so if you’re unable to walk, you can enjoy the views from the bottom deck through windows.
The scenic pit stops along the road were a bonus! They were gravelly and can be accessed about 80% of the time with a manual chair if needed. Some had stairs and really wasn’t accessible so I used my cane. Couldn’t make it to the stairs, but our tour guide warned us ahead of time and was kind and thoughtful, giving us a few options. The conservatory we enjoyed mostly by driving around and taking videos of the animals from the shuttle which was fun since Gary narrated fun facts for us the whole time!
If your wheelchair is motorized and not easily folded up, or you’re not somewhat ambulatory, this would be a really difficult tour, I think. However, if you are a bit mobile, it’s truly an unforgettable tour with the most scenic views ever. It’s how we spent our anniversary and last day in Alaska. A great way to experience a lot of Alaska in a short period of time!
P.S. “Old” Gary is the best!
