We recently visited Maui and did the reverse road to Hana tour. This was the highlight of our 8 days in Maui. I was on the fence of whether or not to book a tour like this solely based on reviews, but in hindsight it was the BEST decision ever.
I did extensive research prior to booking and we knew that this trip was not one of the typical ones offered all over Maui.
From the second we were picked up, we felt comfortable, at ease and in the hands of seasoned professionals. One thing that you do not want to do on your own is drive the road to Hana.
A. You won’t be able to see 1/4 of what you can see as a passenger
B. You will miss many of the hidden treasures, that the locals know about
C. You will not get the wonderful knowledge that the driver will share with you (Scotty Joe & Drew were an A+++++)
D. You will encounter many hairpin turns, a challenge for the best of drivers
And most importantly...
E. You will be fighting with your partner at every turn, to SLOW down and looking at many wives faces in oncoming traffic, most looked miserable...this will completely ruin your trip!!!
You want to do this road in the reverse...why?...because every other tour group and bus is going in the opposite direction. Why is this important?...ever on a one lane road behind a bus?... you lose all vision in front of you and are prisoners behind a slow moving bus, until they decide to pull over....trust me , misery at it’s finest. With the reverse road to Hana, you will be out 10-12 hours, moving the whole time, stopping and seeing magnificent sights and listening to your tour guide.
Our driver and guide was Scotty Joe. If you are lucky, he’ll be your guide too (I’m sure the other drivers are equally as good). You will learn a lot, but most importantly the meaning of Aloha. He was fantastic and the entire experience should not be missed.
The tour is not inexpensive, but how often will you get this chance in life. We were celebrating our anniversary and more importantly after 6 months of cancer treatments, I learned that I’m cancer free! One of my personal life lessons along the way has been, don’t put off what you can do today, none of us are guaranteed tomorrow!
Take this tour, you won’t be disappointed and if you have any questions and are hemming and hawing...feel free to reach out to me!...we will have memories and pictures to last a lifetime, that’s for sure!
