From the start our experience was poor. After finding our guide (which wasn’t easy), we asked them about recommendations from the neighboring businesses. We were taken aback as our guide dismissed the question and wouldn’t provide any recommendations. I felt a bit put off, and unfortunately it didn’t get better from there.
We had a few other people in our group, a couple of them local, and as we moved from stop to stop I overheard them chatting between themselves about historical inaccuracies in the guide’s stories. The local people were clearly not impressed with the history, which I found very disappointing as I expect ghost tours to be honest about history even if the ghost stories themselves might be sensationalized.
Historical inaccuracies aside, we didn’t get what we paid for either. We purchased the “extended tour”, which was supposed to provide us with four extra stops. When the guide ended the tour after about six stops, we asked about the extension and they awkwardly replied that that was all they had for the tour. We left frustrated and very disappointed.
I did follow up with some research of my own at home after the tour, and I was shocked to see how easy it was to find some of the documentation that contradicted what we were told on the tour, particularly about the Poe Museum and the Train Tunnel.
Between the blatantly made up history and the “extended tour” rip-off, I wouldn’t recommend Richmond Ghosts to anyone. We’ll take our business elsewhere if we ever make it back to Richmond.
