I have taken the Cruisin' the Castor Tour twice in the past. The first time the tour guide was the fascinating Trevor Hailey who created the tour. The second time I took the tour I was a bit apprehensive, wondering if it could be as good without her presence. I'm glad to say that I wasn't at all disappointed. Kathy is equally informative and I have enjoyed every minute of the two tours I have taken with her. The Castro is a wonderful part of San Francisco and it's very interesting to witness its evolution. I loved seeing the places that Harvey Milk lived and worked during a turbulent chapter in history that profoundly changed the way we think. Kathy knows so much about the neighbourhood and everyone we spoke with was warm and welcoming. Two years ago, another friend and I had the rare opportunity to meet a Teamsters' leader who worked with Harvey Milk to get Castro bars boycott products of a certain brewery. Incredible. We ended the tour at the Human Rights Store which is full of wonderful souvenirs of your Castro visit. Not only is the merchandise top rate, it feels good knowing you are supporting an important cause. Colton is fabulous and I hope he is still there next time I visit. And there definitely will be a next time. In May, streets were being widened and there was a lot of excitement about bronze plaques celebrating LGBT pioneers. I visit San Francisco every couple of years and I'm certain that Kathy will be seeing me again in 2016. There will be more changes in store as well as more familiar stories that I never tire of hearing. While Union Square and Fishermen's Wharf can be entertaining, I only really began to appreciate San Francisco when I began exploring its neighbourhoods. Whether you already love San Francisco as I do or you're a first-time visitor looking for a way to get to know more about this captivating city, make sure you book a spot on Cruisin' the Castro. I'd rate it right at the top of my list of favourite things to do in San Francisco. In fact, I have never taken a better tour anywhere in the world.
