We took the tour on Friday May 11 with Kathy, who is bubbly, cheery and joyful. The other members of our group were also interesting. We shared information about our experiences to date in San Francisco. We didn't book ahead, and just showed up at the location and time listed on the website. We were a bit nervous at first because we didn't see anyone, but then Kathy showed up and all was good. She assembled the group and the tour started. It was great to get the perspective of someone living in the area. She had stories to go along with the various sights. We met people along the way who welcomed us to the castro. It was very friendly. Kathy went through the details of Harvey Milk and his impact on the area. She also talked about the influx of men during war time, as well as women during WWII. It was moving to see the AIDS mural and quilt and to get details about that history. Overall, the tour was very good. The only downfall was perhaps that Kathy missed some historical details. For example, she explained the history of rainbow flag but admitted to forgetting what the colours represented. I think this is important for a tour of the castro to include. She had good recommendations about eating and going out in the castro that we hope to take advantage of the next time we are in San Francisco.
