We expected local Charleston food at local restaurants. Instead three of our five stops were at franchises. Our first stop was Another Broken Egg Cafe which is a franchise restaurant that started in Louisiana. We had grits and beignets. The grits were good but beignets aren't a Charleston thing and again almost every local restaurant serves grits. Why are were going to a franchise based out of Louisiana instead of a local restaurant. The second stop was The Spice & Tea Exchange that started in Florida and is also a franchise. It was a nice place but other than it being downtown it had nothing to do with the Charleston Food scene. The third and fourth stop were at local Charleston restaurants, I forget the name of the first one but we got a fried green tomato and some red rice. Nothing special but ok. The second local stop was Poogan's Smokehouse. I've been there before, it's good but not where I would go for traditional southern BBQ in Charleston. They do give you a slider, collard greens and cornbread at this stop so you will start getting full at this point. The last stop was at River Street Sweets, which is another franchise and based out of Savannah, that has locations at outlet malls and downtowns from Atlanta to New Jersey. You don't get a history or a tour, you just walk in and pick up a bag with a praline in it along with some 1/2 inch pieces of a few other sweet treats. Our guide was a nice older lady but she really didn't have the demeanor to be a guide. You got a few factoids here and there on the tour but the information was underwhelming and a bit dry. I have taken food tours before and this was the least enjoyable tour I have been on and very overpriced for what you get.

chesneesc, We are very sorry to hear you were disappointed in the culinary tour of downtown Charleston. As to the restaurants and stops that we partner with all have a specific reason for them to be featured on the tour including the food along the way. Perhaps those explanations were not conveyed properly and that will be addressed with your guide, but rest assured the claim that these places have nothing to do with the Charleston culinary scene is absolutely not true. Over the past thirty years, Charleston has worked its way to competing as one of the top culinary meccas in the country. True "chain" restaurants do not last in the historic district. In fact, any restaurant or specialty store that does not have its place in the city closes it door rather quickly. River Street Sweets may have started in Savannah, but its has maintained its location in the Charleston Market since 1984 and is still going strong (which by the way is older than most "Charleston" restaurants). Perhaps this tour was just not for you. Feel free to reach out to our Tour Guide Manager, Andrew Kuhn, at [email protected] to discuss the tour more and how we can make this right to you. Thanks again for the feedback and for visiting Charleston.
