SEA LIFE at Mall of America
Visitors of all ages will gain a new understanding of the world's oceans through the aquarium's ocean tanks, Octopus Garden and rock pool, where you’ll see animals never before seen in Minnesota, and learn about marine conservation. Make your way through interactive exhibits such as Claws, where you’ll find Japanese spider crabs — just one of the many crustaceans featured here. Discover coconut crabs, which use their huge claws like bolt cutters to crack open coconuts and be awed by porcupine crabs, land crabs and more as you get up-close views of how they eat. Spot clown fish and sea turtles and watch jellyfish floating inside cylindrical tanks that mimic ocean tides and currents. At the Pacific Northwest display, you can learn about sea anemones, cucumbers and sea stars. As you walk through the 300-foot-long (91-meter) tunnel, sandtiger sharks flash rows of sharp teeth above your head and cownose rays glide on the aquarium floor. Make your way to four themed tanks, starting with hundreds of sea creatures like nurse, zebra, and bamboo sharks that swim around in the Rainbow Reef tank. Marvel at green sawfish, loggerhead turtles, and guitarfish at Atlantis; see arapaima and tiger shovelnose catfish at the Amazon River; and check out alligator gar, paddlefish, and large-mouth bass at Sturgeon Lake. Passionate about preserving marine habitats and the species that live in them, the informative staff at SEA LIFE Minnesota celebrates everything about the sea. The aquarium hosts shark and ray feedings, as well as educational demonstrations throughout the day. Learn about successful breeding programs for sharks and endangered creatures like seahorses, and discover how the aquarium supports global conservation efforts.

Mall of America

The aquarium isn't huge it also isn't small. There are many species of aquatic Life in the middle of Mall of America. The staff was so informative and friendly, it really made you want to interact. I was here on vacation in during a weekday so it was not crowded but I'm assuming during the weekends it is packed.

Personally to me this is just another chance for the Mall of America to suck in your money. I was really excited to check this out as I am a huge fan of aquariums and they were opening the brand new Rainforest section just a week before we visited. We bought our tickets online to save a few bucks ahead of time, but in my opinion even with the cheaper price, it wasn't worthwhile. It was difficult to tell where to enter with our pre purchased tickets. Once we finally got that sorted out, we entered the rainforest section. The exhibits were very small and many of them appeared to still be empty. The section with the alligators had a bubble you could crawl into where you could supposedly have the alligators by your head, but they were all on the opposite side of the exhibit, so you couldn't actually get a photo op. Then you went through like 3 underwater tunnels under the sharks and turtles, which was cool and all, but again, not overly worth the money as the tunnels are short and really crowded with everyone trying to get pictures. From there you went down a level to the stingray tank, which you had to pay extra money to feed and couldn't even touch as I've done at other zoos. They did have a touch tank area with a very cranky worker yelling at everyone about washing hands. (I know and understand the importance of it, but you are working with kids and tourists, be kind about it!) The touch tanks had a few starfish and other corals and anemones, but otherwise was pretty limited. The Butterfly House and Aquarium in Sioux Falls, SD offers way more to touch in touch tanks for half the price!

I had a really wonderful time with my VIP “behind the scenes” tour of the Sea Life aquarium in the Mall of America with my tour guide Phil. I was the only one on the tour that day, but he seemed super enthusiastic to show me around anyway. He was so amazingly knowledgeable and even though he clearly had been touring people for years, it was made obvious that he is still consistently learning new awesome facts and keeping up with current aquatic news and information. It was so cool to see how things operated on deck, from fish diet and feeding to current conservation projects. I’m so happy I got Phil as my guide and I would absolutely recommend him and the entire tour to anyone who really has an interest in marine life and conservation efforts.
