Today, you can step onto this ancient trading route yourself. Also located at the beginning of this historic trail is the Grand Portage National Monument, with reconstructed buildings of the trading fort and representations of the Ojibwe Village. The Monument and Heritage Center are well worth visiting.

Many state parks and waysides on the North Shore Scenic Drive have a waterfall for visitors to enjoy, and waterfall chasers will find many delights. The best time of year to enjoy waterfalls on the North Shore is April when the snow typically melts, sending water crashing through the rivers that feed into Lake Superior. Just one great example is Devil’s Kettle Falls, located Inside Judge C.R. Magney State Park. A double waterfall forms where the Brule River splits into two falls separated by an outcropping of hard, volcanic rhyolite rock. On one side, the river falls into a pool of water and continues on its journey to Lake Superior. But where does the other side go?

This audio tour transformed our drive along the North Shore. We got historical background and stopover tips that we otherwise would have entirely missed. The tour triggers its audio based on your GPS location and seems highly intelligent, such that it correctly recognized when we were backtracking after side trips off the main route. The narrator was excellent at making the content interesting, with deft use of humor. My only quibble would be that it omitted mention of the memorial to the 19th century Bishop Frederic Baraga, a legend in the Lake Superior watershed. Fortunately we spotted the state highway sign in time to not miss that site.

We just did a drive a long highway 61, something we've done before but we discovered new places, stopped at Betty's Pies (obviously) but the license plate on the wall took on a whole new meaning after listening to the tour. I think for spring break we'll do the whole tour up to Grand Portage.
