Skagway was the second port of call on our Alaskan Cruise. This was amazing excursion. Our tour guide Bryan was very knowledgable and lots of fun. The drive to the Yukon dog sledding training camp was so beautiful. By far my favorite part was the dog sledding. The mushers and the staff at Caribou Crossing were so informative and it was cool that we got to ride with teams of dogs that were being trained for the Iditarod, Also was able to hold Alaskan Husky puppies. On the way back to Skagway, we saw two bears. Highly recommend this tour!

BOOKED THIS VIA " Alaska Shore Tours" which is a company that organizes tours through other companies. The last time we did this tour it was with Frontier Excursions. We loved it so much we booked it again exactly 1 year later to the day. However this time we were booked through Southeast Tours which is the tour I am reviewing this time. Southeast Tours is a nice enough outfit, however we did have a little trouble finding our meeting point as it was NOT at the end of our pier from the cruise ship as was stated rather way out in the parking lot. Then we were driven to a spot in town where we checked in. We had a BRAND NEW driver named Allen who knew a lot and was really kind but Bless him, I think he was really nervous about time. We flew through the drive. I was the one spotting bears on the road and he was great about stopping if we did see them but when we had done this tour a year ago with Frontier it was our guide/driver who spotted all the wildlife. This time felt rushed. That was simply our luck of the draw and I think once our driver gets more experience he will be amazing. He was very very nice and knowledgable, just new so nervous. The quality of the lunch at sled dog camp hasn't improved at all. They talk about this delicous BBQ chicken lunch, but it is stale potatoes with dark meat chick thigh. Do yourself a favor and get the Veggie dish. They do have hot coffee at the Dog Sled camp and donuts which is nice. We had a gorgeous day and a fun time but another change from last year was the "Sled" you ride on. Not at all like the pictures posted on Alaska Shore Tours website, but rather a motorized large multi passenger ATV type thing. Not a big deal as they explained why they use it but be aware it is different than the pics currently show or what we were on a year ago. One added thing from last year was the presentation from the musher about the dogs and his experience in the Iditarod which was a GREAT addition. We learned a lot, However, one HUGE change we were dissappointed with is that you do NOT get to hold or pet the puppies at all. The previous year, we got in a lot of puppy holding time. I have amazing pictures but this time we brought our daughter specifically for the puppy play time and instead they have implemented a lottery system for holding the puppies. This wasn't explained to us upon booking OR once we got there. By the time we figured out we weren't getting to hold the puppies, we had to leave, so there was no time to enter the lottery. The lady said, we have 600 people coming through here every day, that would be too much for the puppies. I understand that but since we did it last year, it made no sense that it wasn't happening this year. A few other changes, last year, we stopped at the little town of Carcross which was nice and we enjoyed it, but this year we didn't. Last year we stopped at a waterfall, this year we didn't. So not sure if the things we didn't get to do this time were because of the different tour vendor or a new driver but overall take home is that you should DEFINITELY book this tour, just don't expect to pet the puppies or be on a sled. Confirm which stops will occur before booking as we were disappointed with not being able to stop at the waterfall or Carcross as we did with Frontier. Bring snacks for the drive if you are hungry.
