The Jungle Prada Site is the best-preserved American Indian site in Tampa Bay. The highlight of our 75-minute guided Florida history tour is a huge Tocobaga Indian midden mound and adjoining village plaza. Hidden away in the historic neighborhood known as Jungle Prada, the main mound consists of tens of thousands of ancient conch and whelk shells, and is more than 900 feet long! The subtropical jungle landscape here is populated by dozens of beautiful free-roaming peacocks! The tour and the locations are loaded with Florida history that is explained in a vibrant and engaging way. In addition to learning about the lives of the Tocobaga Indians, you'll also encounter the amazing story of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, a Spanish conquistador who landed at the Jungle Prada with the 1528 Narvaez Expedition, and whose incredible journey of survival took him and three others from Florida all the way to the Pacific Ocean (1528 - 1536). If you are a Florida resident or a visitor interested in history and archaeology, the Jungle Prada Site Tour is a rewarding experience that will engage your mind and challenge your perceptions about the Sunshine State!

Outstanding tour. This tour is part history, part nature. Ours lasted about 90 minutes and it was a light walk through the site. My parents are in their 70s and 80s and this was easy for them. The tour guide (David) greets you in the parking lot or at the far end of the dirt parking lot in a large greenhouse that his grandmother built. You will hear the story about how his grandparents acquired and cared for the property over their lives and how David and his parents care for it now. David studied botany so he can identify every plant and its original use to the native peoples of the area. The high point of the tour is the giant Indian mound that predates Spanish arrival. He tells the history (what we know if it) of the native peoples and their traditions. He also discusses the Narvaez expedition that landed here in 1528. That arrival marked the first Mass in what is now the United States, the first martyr and the beginning of the first transcontinental expedition. The Narvaez expedition that landed here was also the beginning of the recorded history between what is now the United States and Cuba. Don't forget to marvel at the Frank Lloyd Wright style home his grandfather designed and built. And be sure to buy the history books he has available.

I highly recommend this tour. Private property that has preserved the Indian Mound. I am getting old as we enjoyed the history of Florida. David was amazing. His grandfather bought the property and has preserved this historic landmark.

David, a third generation resident of the area, gave an interesting and well researched tour of the Native American site and the history of early Spanish explorers.
