Sunset is a magical time on the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. There is movement everywhere. Dolphins are rounding up their dinner, manatees are moving into the shallows to find a comfortable spot to spend the night. As the light fades and the sky ignites with dynamics color, “Mullethead Island,” a federally protected rookery, buzzes with activity as many of the refuge’s 358 unique bird species flock above you to their protected nests for the night. Typical species to expect include Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills, all set to the backdrop of rocket launch pads and iconic NASA landscape. Launch into your escape.

What to bring:
Clothes you don’t mind getting a little wet. Towel (left in car)
Water Shoes – sandals or Crocs that can be worn in the water
Bring an extra change of clothes just in case
Camera & Dry bag (optional) These are fairly useless to capture bioluminescence, but great for capturing people.
Bottled water, Snacks
Any special personal paddling gear if you like
You may bring a flashlight, though we will provide a safety light.

My niece and nephew were down from VA and they wanted to do something outdoor and adventurous. We booked a private sunset kayak tour and all of us had an amazing time! Sunny was our tour guide and we all enjoyed her enthusiasm, passion for nature, and her positive energy. Additionally, she made us feel safe and at ease throughout the entire tour. Being out there was breathtaking, you felt immersed in a new world being in the realm of aquatic creatures. The gorgeousness of the sunset was only matched by the magnificent moonrise. Sunny let us all pause and just be in the experience before continuing on, which we all really appreciated. I look forward to going again, and will definitely ask for Sunny!

My friend and I had the most magical experience kayaking with a group of all ages and experience levels. Our guides, Mark and Katie, made sure we saw everything; dolphins, petting manatees, a stunning sunset, and, a rocket launch, and bioluminescence. This was another best day ever.

This was wonderful!!! Sunny was a great guide. Informed and knowledgeable, patient and had a good plan for the evening. Some of the participants were late and she made up for it on the time, it worked out to be in our favor, the darker it gets the more everything lights up, also there was no moon, so the stars were amazing, and the bioluminescence was extra bright. We saw manatees, dolphin, crabs (very cool), fish, and plenty of birds. This trip is highly recommended!! I will do it again someday and have already posted on FB and my friend posted on Instagram.
