This sail was so much more than I expected! Friendly Captain Joel and First Mate Dave were very welcoming, friendly and willing to share the history, lore and ways of the wind.
Built by Captain Joel himself, the Copacetic and he were hunter and hound after the wind. He knows the waters well and even cajoled a few dolphins to race with us!
We experienced pockets of glassine calm while we savored a rare view of child and adult dolphins near shore. Other times he encouraged budding sailors to try their hand at the tiller. I was delighted to take a turn, after many years away from sailing.
Clearly born to the sea, Captain Joel suited our sail to whatever the guests wanted - fast and exhilarating, or calm and reflective. He took photos with us and was willing to center the boat so the best angle of the sun framed us.
As we headed back from Sanibel Island toward Fort Meyers, Getaway Marina, he asked us, “How long does the sun take to set once it hits the horizon line?” Speculations abounded, and cameras were rolling to verify each answer.
Let me tell you, it melts so slowly but happens too quickly. Just like any sweet memory, my sail on the Copacetic will always stay on my horizon.
