The Official Art Deco Gift Shop

Founded in 1976, The Miami Design Preservation League has proudly offered guided walking tours of The Art Deco District for over 40 years. All Proceeds go towards supporting preservation. Visitors are introduced to the history, architecture, and preservation efforts of Miami Beach. Tour ticket includes free admission to the Art Deco Museum and Gift Shop. There are a limited amount of tickets available for each tour, so early bookings are encouraged . Please arrive 15 minutes prior to tour departure for check-in.

We enjoyed a marvelous walk through the Art Deco area of South Beach sponsored by the Miami Design Preservation League. It was enhanced by the knowledge and very pleasant demeanor of our guide, Jeff. His love of architecture as well as his love of Miami permeated his presentation. He engaged the participants in the tour, encouraging questions and comments. We recommend it highly!

We took the Art Deco Walking tour at 10:30 with guide Marty Mueller. While the information he provided was good, his behaviour wasn't. At the beginning of the tour, he asked all participants in which hotel they are staying. This is private information in my mind. When I asked him politely between stops while he was walking on the pavement a question about art deco in Miami Beach he became aggressive and said "THIS IS A GROUP TOUR! YOU MUST STAY WITH THE GROUP! ASK YOUR QUESTIONS IN THE GROUP!" However, he never invited or awaited questions during his stops. Before this incident, I had asked him the meaning of "portholes" (English is not my mother tongue). Towards the end of the tour, he pointed out portholes on a building and said to me in front of the group "These are portholes." and then to the group "My German friend didn't know the meaning." I find this unnecessary. In a hotel lobby, he selected a tour participant and asked him what bird was in the middle of a painting (a flamingo), what color it had and why. He then narrated ironically that a prior participant said it is art deco pink. I find it inappropriate to put a customer on the spot and to make fun of a prior customer. I got the feeling Mr. Mueller is under the impression that he paid us to follow him and listen. I have taken over 100 tours worldwide and never written a complaint.

First and foremost, our sincerest apologies for your unpleasant experience and thank you, for bringing this to our attention. Your complaint has been taken seriously, forwarded and addressed. I am pleased to hear you learned a lot during the tour. We have talked to Marty regarding this issue and he also apologizes for anything he said that offended you, it certainly was not his intention. As a a non-profit organization devoted to preserving, protecting, and promoting the Art Deco Historic District, where historic preservation is a concern, we want to create awareness of our plight. Secondly, we want our tour participants to be provided with the best information available, learn about the importance of preservation and leave having had the best experience possible. Overall, Mr. Mueller is an excellent tour guide, and this complaint comes as a surprise, and a first. Nonetheless, it is not taken lightly. MDPL is the private primary advocate for historic preservation in the City of Miami Beach and your support helps us to continue with these efforts, with our tours being the life-line of our organization. We depend highly on the volunteer efforts of our guides who are passionate of this endeavor, hence, making this incident an unfortunate one. It is our hope that your overall visit to Miami Beach was a pleasant one and that this incident not negatively reflect on us as an organization, but that of an unpleasant personal experience. As such, we would like to offer you a full refund, a complimentary tour or both. Again, our sincerest apologies and regret to hear that this took place.

My recent walking tour of the Art Deco neighbourhood was very enjoyable. Kent was knowledgeable, and I could tell that he really cares about this district. I learned a great deal about the history of South Beach and Miami, the architecture and the colorful characters who have visited and lived here. The length of the tour is fine @ 90 minutes. Kent made a point of directing the group to shady areas as often as possible. It is good value for the money.
